SUMMARY
This is a key position and second in command within the Golf Course Maintenance Department. Works directly with the Director of Agronomy to help develop a daily work schedule and coordinate the related activities and necessary equipment with the staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Ensures that maintenance personnel are properly trained on all equipment to provide uniformity and consistency throughout the golf course.
• Supervises the repair and maintenance of all mechanical and motorized equipment used on the golf course.
• Instruct equipment operators in the safe and efficient operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
• Assists in personnel management and evaluation, safety, and personnel discipline.
• Responsible for the maintenance of OSHA related processes, including MSDA, Hazard Communication program and OSHA safety training.
• Scouts, monitors, and investigates the conditions of the golf course properly, including but not limited to disease, pests, irrigation requirements and vandalism. Presents recommendations for repair or control.
• Calibrates, properly operates all spreaders and sprayers, and applies fertilizers and fungicides to golf courses in an accurate and efficient manner.
• Assists in the planning, scheduling, and supervising the construction and maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and associated support facilities.
• Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, irrigation, and drainage systems.
• Maintains accurate application records and logs for weather, fertilization, disease control, work and cultural practices as required.
• Have knowledge of the irrigation system and ability to set-up the central irrigation computer for daily watering activity, understanding turf water usage and and principles of deep and infrequent irrigation.
• Oversee daily/weekly payrolls. Prepare department schedules.
Qualifications
Skills/ Abilities
• Must possess good verbal and written skills.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of the organization.
• Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations, and repairs for the property.
• Able to create Microsoft Excel formulas and spreadsheets.
• Ability to apply algebra and geometry math skills.
Education/Experience:
• High School or equivalent education required.
• Associate degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school (agronomy/horticulture/soil science-preferred).
• Or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Able to obtain SPCC Pesticide License within 90 days.
• Valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to physically reach, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 100 pounds.
• Must be able to work under variable temperature conditions (extreme heat or cold, indoors/outdoors).
• Must be able to work around chemicals, dust, fumes and/or odor hazards.
• Must be able to work in extreme temperatures, such as freezers (-10F) and boiler rooms ( 100F) possibly for one hour or more.
