Scope of the Position :

The Environmental Technician is responsible planning daily analysis, test and data preparation in the steel, E-coat, Powder coat, and Wastewater treatment areas. Environmental Technician will ensure that the operation of the lab will run efficiently and maintain data so that the highest quality production standards are met while following all environment, health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities : Job Duties

  • Research environmental information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the workplace.
  • Manage and maintain wastewater treatment system at peak operating levels with the goal of meeting regulatory requirements, operating cost efficiently and minimizing impacts to production and the environment.
  • Conducts research on hazardous waste management projects determining the magnitude of problems and treatment or disposal alternatives and cost.
  • Handle all environmental testing, recordkeeping and submission of reports to local, state or provincial and federal regulators.
  • Maintain and update environmental policy and procedure manual.
  • Responsible for environmental orientation, training, and job site inspections.
  • Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company environmental management program by all Flex-N-Gate employees and subcontractors.
  • Prepare and enter data for Statistical Process Control Program and run charts
  • Daily analysis according to lab schedule for ecoat process tanks
  • Determines sites and violation reports to investigate, coordinating compliance and enforcement activities with government agencies.
  • Monitors follow-up actions where violations were found, and reviews compliance monitoring reports.
  • Provides advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of environmental issues and decisions.
  • Advises on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures.
  • Acts as Environmental Management Representative (EMR) with issues related to Governmental Regulations and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Manage repairs or coordinate with maintenance, any repairs to waste treatment systems.
  • Manage or establish preventive maintenance programs as required.
  • Direct hourly ecoat technicians based on daily analysis of process tanks for chemical adjustments
  • Supervise management of hazardous waste storage areas and building in compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Maintain and revise department work instructions and procedures as required.
  • Complete department-specific regulatory reports
  • Preforms internal audits of our Environmental Systems to insure we are in compliance with all Government regulations and ISO 14001 guidelines
  • Safely handle potentially harmful chemicals and wastes (strong corrosives, chrome wastes, etc.) on a day-to-day basis.
  • Complete manifests, confirm proper labeling and DOT placarding for hazardous waste shipments.

Working Conditions

Physical ability to lift minimum of 25

  • Overtime as required.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts
  • Must be able to work unsupervised
  • Ability to work inside and outside, in cold and hot environments

    Qualifications :

    Education & Background Requirements :

  • Associates degree in Environmental Science or related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in waste water treatment or at minimum two (2) years experience as an industrial process operator, maintenance or lab technician (or equivalent)
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written). Proficiency with database applications and administration systems, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Mathematical aptitude (basic calculations working with fractions, ratios, proportions, and units of measure).
  • Exhibit mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to work effectively alone and prioritize. Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with an attention to detail.
  • Troubleshooting ability is required along with good computer and presentation skills with ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated good internal customer service skills
  • Training & Development Requirements

  • Must obtain Michigan-related Industrial / Commercial Wastewater Operator certification within 12 months (based on available scheduling).
  • 24-hour HAZWOPER certification within first 6 months and maintain annual refresher.
  • DOT Shipping Hazardous Materials training within first 6 months and refresher every three (3) years.
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 EMS Systems.
  • Obtain / maintain Forklift Operators license.
