Shift: 2pm - 10:30pm
Primary Summary
The position of Utilities Systems Mechanic was established for the purpose of assuring maximum performance, reliability, and uptime of plant utility systems. The responsibility of the Utilities Systems Mechanic is to develop and apply hands-on technical expertise as the Primary Utilities Systems Mechanic and complete the preventative maintenance at the Ventura Coastal processing facility in Visalia, CA.
Utilities System Reliability
He/she will apply hands-on technical expertise and daily service of utility equipment including routine inspections, mechanical repairs, and preventive maintenance with a primary focus on plant Utility systems. Utility systems Include, but are not limited to, boiler support high-pressure air systems, Ammonia and ammonia support systems, waste water systems, fresh water systems, gas and electrical supplies, buildings, grounds and others areas as assigned.
He/she will report directly and provide assistance to the Maintenance Manager/Supervisor. Utilities Systems Mechanic will assure all plant utility equipment run properly when it is required for operation. He/she will maintain assets most profitably for the useful life of the equipment.
Preventive Maintenance Planning
The Utilities Systems Mechanic, with direction from the Maintenance Manager, will directly coordinate preventive and predictive maintenance along with emergency repairs. He/She shall assist in maximizing equipment reliability and operating profit through using the planned predictive/preventive maintenance CMMS process most effectively.
As primary CMMS systems user, The Utilities Systems Mechanic is empowered to coordinate work priority with the Maintenance manager, develop job plans, define parts and materials, define crafts and skills and recommend proper resources to develop a safe, effective and efficient predictive/preventive work plan. This includes routine communication of preventive maintenance performance data through report options within the CMMS program and application of all functions of the CMMS program to achieve the company preventive maintenance goals.
What you will do in this role
Food Safety is the responsibility of all Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees. All Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees must be aware of CCPs in their area and how to document them appropriately. All staff must report food safety and quality problems to their immediate supervisor in charge during their shift.
The Utilities Systems Mechanic role is Hands-on execution of the following:
Establishes coordinates and improves Preventative maintenance of utility systems by applying knowledge of current equipment and increased knowledge of new and up dated equipment.
- Responsible hands–on for the day to day and periodic Preventative Maintenance (PM’s) of:
- Ammonia compressors, vessels, piping, SRV’s and all related devices utilizing Ammonia refrigeration.
- Production and office HVAC systems
- Steam boilers, vessels, piping and valves
- High pressure air compressors and air driers
- Condensers and cooling towers.
- Glycol system
- High voltage power distribution switch gear
- Waste water distribution system, lift systems , valve and piping
- Water softener system, valve piping and controls
- Well water maintenance systems pumps controls and vessels
- Diesel fire pump and fire hydrant distribution system and controls
- Outdoor building and parking area lighting and parking and drive surface maintenance.
- Regularly inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards..
- Completes daily ammonia refrigeration readings and has ability to identify concerns from readings and respond with corrective action.
- Achieves a RETA membership and completes a RETA basic ammonia training including a CARO NH3 certification
- Keeps management and engineering well informed as to concerns on Utility Systems preventive maintenance planning and needs.
- Completes and assures daily meter readings as needed.
- Provide back-up for vacation or time off requests from Maintenance Mechanics as needed
- Train mechanics in the safe, quality-oriented maintenance of equipment and plant systems.
- Provide technical assistance relative to utilities system to mechanics as needed.
Preventive Maintenance Functions:
- Utilizes new tools, training or processes to improve the Ventura Coastal Preventative Maintenance Program
- Participate in regulatory inspections with the EHS Engineer as needed.
- Promote safety in the department and advises the Maintenance Manager and/or EHS engineer of non-compliance to company safety requirements.
- Place orders for parts as necessary, to ensure efficient operation of the stores system to ensure the right parts are available.
- Makes recommendations to Maintenance Manager
- Determines urgency of work and recommends priority to Maintenance Manager.
- Prepares estimates including labor and materials needed for work orders. Assures materials are on hand or arranged.
- Assures work orders are properly filled out and completed on time. Reports non compliance to the maintenance manager.
- Assures all parts used to work orders are so noted on work order in order to build history in CMMS and ensure proper accounting.
- Report non- standard personnel or equipment conditions to the Maintenance Manager for final resolution.
- Complete shift paperwork and documentation as necessary.
- Act professionally towards customers, vendors and other visitors to the plant.
- Demonstrate reliable attendance, consistent punctuality and a positive attitude.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What You will Bring to this Role
- Five (8 ) years industrial maintenance experience.
- An experienced maintenance generalist who can recognize job needs and plans work in a variety of electrical, mechanical, and structural maintenance jobs.
- Post high school education in maintenance related courses or equivalent work experience.
- Regulatory - Possess working knowledge of regulatory requirements for federal and state programs, and processes.
- Food Processing – Food processing industry experience required.
- Knowledge of motors, pumps, boiler, ammonia systems, waste water and compressors.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting aptitude and demonstrated mechanical skills.
- Have tools suitable to meet the requirements of a utility maintenance mechanic.
- Ability to troubleshoot citrus production equipment
- Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs; and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Skilled in organization and prioritization, and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills
- Strong team player with the ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Bi-lingual skills (English and Spanish) are a plus.
- Possess a valid fork lift license or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to Pass a RETA CARO (Certified Ammonia Refrigeration Operator) certification test.
The Physical Requirements of this role
Must have the ability to meet flexible and changing priorities and the ability to work under pressure. 80% walking, climbing ladders and stairs in a plant environment. 15% office environment at a desk or working at a computer terminal. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs on occasion. May be required to assume different physical positions while fixing equipment. May be on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
