What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Technician I position at Ventura County?
Under immediate supervision, the Library Technician I provides paraprofessional library services in a community library or a support department; may supervise or serve as lead person for pages, student workers and volunteers; and performs related work as required. Positions allocated to the Library Technician I classification may be responsible for public programming relating to adult education, family literacy, and workforce development.
Library Technician I is the entry/journey level classification in this job series. Incumbents in this classification differ from clerical classifications in that the incumbent performs a variety of paraprofessional tasks requiring knowledge of library terminology and principles. Work is typically performed within a framework of established procedures under occasional instruction or assistance. Incumbents may be assigned at any community library, special libraries and in support departments or special programs, such as the READ Adult Literacy Program.
EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
Library Technician I is represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
OPENING DATE: Friday, May 03, 2024
CLOSING DATE: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.
REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS: Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis beginning the week of May 13, 2024.Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists and instructs patrons on the use of library resources;
- Assists the librarian in the coordination and implementation of library programs and activities, including book/material selection and publicity;
- Charges and discharges library books and materials;
- Performs outreach to promote library services, prepares and makes presentations to the community about library programs, services, and resources;
- May train and assign work of pages and volunteers;
- Other related duties as required.
Any combination of education or experience which demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). Possession of the required KSAs may typically be demonstrated by:
- An Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology, OR
- Successful completion of two (2) years of college coursework AND one (1) year of experience involving public contact, OR
- Successful completion of three (3) years of college coursework, OR
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible clerical experience involving public contact or library services.
Position allocated in this classification may require bilingual skills.
Supplemental Information:
- May be required to work evenings, Saturdays and/or Sundays.
- The ability to bend, stoop, lift (up to 25 lbs), and/or move books.
- The ability to move around the Library during work shift in order to assist Library patrons, supervise pages, and secure the good order of the building.
- Experience working in a public library environment.
- Experience working with children and teens in a library or educational setting.
- Proficiency with computers and internet resources.
Some to working knowledge of:
- Library agency principles, policies, procedures, terminology and services;
- Basic print and digital research tools;
- The Dewey Decimal book classification system and collection arrangements;
- Learning materials, learning styles, and effective tutoring techniques;
- Basic clerical and computer skills, including word processing, basic software applications, and Internet research.
- Secure the good order of the building;
- Operate and/or instruct on the use of library equipment (e.g., computer terminals, print/document stations, microfilm/ microfiche projectors);
- Organize and disseminate information;
- Communicate effectively and relate well with people from all age groups;
- Plan and supervise the work of volunteers and pages;
- Plan, coordinate and conduct library tours and class visits;
- Interpret and execute written and verbal instructions;
- Solve problems and develop methods for implementing solutions; and
- Effectively organize workload.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: An un-proctored, internet-based job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate participating candidates’ knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to shelving, reference, vocabulary, interpersonal relations, and mathematics. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
ELIGIBLE LIST
Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular, (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra Help for this and similar vacancies within the Ventura County Library. There is currently one (1) Regular, Part-Time vacancy and one (1) Extra-Help vacancy within Ventura County Library Services in various locations.
