Before surgery
- Sterilization: Sterilize the operating room and surgical equipment
- Preparation: Prepare the patient for surgery, including washing and disinfecting incision sites
- Gathering supplies: Gather, count, and arrange surgical tools and supplies
- Assisting the surgeon: Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon, and hold retractors or instruments as directed
- Maintaining sterility: Maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections
- Monitoring: Monitor blood and fluid loss, and ensure the correct count of instruments, needles, and sponges
- Closing wounds: Close surgical wounds and apply dressings
- Postoperative care: Move the patient to a recovery area, count tools, and dispose of used items
- Stay uptodate on surgical technology, medical terminology, and procedures
- Work well with other members of the surgical team
- Uphold professional standards of practice and ethical principles
- Remain calm under pressure and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
- Secure and prepare all supplies required for surgical intervention
- Ensure the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in OR
- Perform instrument counts prior to each procedure
- Prepare patient skin for surgical treatment
- Position and reposition patient during surgery
- Help monitor patients during surgery
- Provide supportive care during the preoperative phase
- Perform scrub functions
- Collect and label specimens taken during surgical procedure
- Follow all federal, state and departmental safety procedures
- Diploma or graduation required
- Surgical technician certification from an accredited college or training program required
- 3 years’ experience in a hospital or outpatient operating room
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment
- Ability to lift 23 kg
- Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique
