About Verbio
At our South Bend location, Verbio produces ethanol from corn with plans to produce biomethane (renewable natural gas) as an ethanol co-product from feedstock.
Workplace and Working Conditions: Plant location with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
Work hours are Monday-Friday daytime hours and may occasionally require evenings, weekends, and holidays in support of the production schedule.
Basic Function
The purpose of the Health and Safety Specialist role is to ensure a safe working environment by maintaining compliance with OSHA standards, implementing effective safety programs, and proactively identifying and mitigating workplace hazards. The Specialist will drive safety culture by leading safety training, conducting audits, and continually enhancing safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or engineering equivalent
Associate degree with 3 years of working experience in a heavy manufacturing or industrial setting

Key Responsibilities
- Safety Compliance:
- Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for all plant safety procedures and OSHA standards.
- Develop, modify, and update safety protocols to meet OSHA's minimum requirements and industry standards.
- Ensure all safety procedures are documented and readily accessible.
- Training and Development
- Create, implement, and manage safety training materials and plans.
- Train plant employees and contractors on safety protocols, hazard identification, and response procedures.
- Conduct refresher training as necessary and maintain training records.
- Audits and Assessments
- Perform regular safety audits, including permitting audits, work audits, and job safety analyses.
- Identify and address gaps in compliance or potential hazards through plan inspections
- Coordinate with supervisors and management to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Procedure Review
- Conduct ongoing reviews and updates of safety procedures and protocols.
- Recommend and implement improvements to existing safety policies to enhance workplace safety.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and other departments to align procedures with plant activities.
- Daily Safety Support
- Provide day-to-day safety support to ensure ongoing plant compliance and incident prevention.
- Assist in managing safety permitting processes and overseeing hazard assessments for specific tasks.
- Respond to safety concerns and incidents promptly; and conduct root cause analyses when necessary.
