What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Care Specialist position at Verde Valley Humane Society?
The Animal Care Specialist is a key team member in ensuring the Shelter animals are well cared for in clean and wholesome environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Feed and water all animals as assigned, observing and reporting signs of illness, behavior change, or injury.
- Clean and sanitize facility and cat and dog habitats according to outlined procedures, including emptying garbage, washing and sanitizing bowls, blankets, towels and cat litter pans.
- Monitor habitats throughout day; provide additional cleaning or care, as needed.
- Handle all animals humanely and safely using safety equipment if necessary.
- Interact with internal and external customers while maintaining a friendly and helpful demeanor.
- Restock supplies in all areas as needed.
- Assist in training new staff members.
- Move animals and necessary paperwork as required within the facility.
- Provide animals with appropriate toys for mental stimulation.
- May assist with meet and greet procedure between dogs or remove dogs from kennel to show to prospective adopters.
- May assist with the transportation of animals to/from local veterinarians.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
- A basic knowledge of animals and animal handling is preferred.
- The ability to multi-task and work consistently at a fast pace.
Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.
Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Must possess basic customer service skills. Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation is required. Ability to handle animals safely and humanely in all conditions. Able to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends. Must be able to work under stressful and fast-paced conditions.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. There is continuous standing, walking, reaching, and carrying animals and supplies over 70 pounds. There is continuous repetitive motion of the hands, arms and legs. Good vision and hearing are required. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment: The Animal Care Specialist is exposed to potentially dangerous, fast-moving animals There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander.

Pay: From $14.70 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
