The Fermentation Technician plays an important role in the day-to-day operation of the Liquid Manufacturing Department, chemical processing, operation of pressure vessels and their support systems, and the production of fermentation batches. The quality and purity of our product is extremely important; therefore, the Fermentation Technician is responsible for sterility of equipment, tools, and surfaces to prevent cross-contamination within the process. The Liquid Manufacturing department activities include but are not limited to equipment set up, raw material additions, monitoring batches, cleaning/breakdown of equipment, problem-solving, project planning, QC/R&D samples, culture sample test, safety, and following instructions to create batches.

Essential Responsibilities
- Cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing equipment for fermentation; experience in Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedures, cGmp requirements, and general hygiene/sanitation is helpful with these tasks.
- Performs all cleaning procedures for associated periphery equipment, this includes sterilizing equipment’s exterior surfaces and dismantling, reassembling and sterilizing interior parts (where necessary and applicable).
- Creates and blends chemical and nutrient ingredients on a large scale to begin the fermentation process; Chemical processing and/or chemical engineering experience is helpful with these tasks
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to accurately operate fermenting tanks (culture tanks)
- Monitors microbial growth parameters. (pH monitoring)
- Acquire knowledge and understanding of all liquid products and formulations to adequately support operations at the Salt Lake City, Utah, production facility.
- Understanding and capability of operating equipment needed in the liquid manufacturing area of the plant. Including, but not limited to mixing tanks, culture tanks, holding tanks, CIP system, water batching, heating and cooling system, transfer pumps, ingredient pumps, shear blenders, ingredient crusher, liquid ball mill, and tote washer.
- Ability to learn processes in other departments and to assist when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by the liquid supervisor.
- Experience in food processing, chemical processing, fermentation, or working within an FDA regulated facility
- Comply with federal laws regulating waste disposal methods.
- Work in a manner consistent with safety policy and PPE to avoid injury.
- Assure the working area is accessible and safe for employees, maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Operation of forklift and scissor lift.
- Ability to lift 55 lbs. repeatedly and up to 75 lbs. with assistance occasionally throughout the day.
- Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow English verbal and written instructions.
- Strong basic math skills.
- Ability to read and operate scales.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Ability to manage oneself in stressful situations.
- Associate’s degree in life sciences or chemistry preferred
- 2-3 years of experience in fermentation or chemical processing preferred
