What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Scientist | Agricultural Risk Modeling position at Verisk?
Join our growing Research department as a member of our dynamic Boston-based agricultural risk modeling team. You will develop models that describe agroecosystems and how they can be affected by extreme weather – across spatial scales from individual farms to entire countries. As a member of this collegial team, you’ll work both independently and collaboratively incorporating up-to-date scientific knowledge, data, and modeling approaches into our existing agricultural risk models and creatively developing and testing new crop and livestock models. You will engage directly with clients to see how our work impacts them and grow your career with leadership opportunities. This role is based in our Boston location which has a flexible hybrid work model (2-3 days per week in-office).
About You and How You Can Excel in This Role
- Ph.D. in (agricultural) meteorology, agronomy, animal science, soil science, natural resources, geography, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, statistics, applied math, computational biology, agricultural economics, or related discipline 6 years relevant experience.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills and ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Strong mathematical or statistical modeling experience with applications to agricultural and/or environmental sciences.
- Experience leveraging large (GB to TB-scale) datasets.
- Strong foundation in statistics.
- Market knowledge of crop insurance and domain expertise in crop insurance programs, especially multiple-peril crop insurance in the United States.
- Solid programming skills gained through practical experience using interpreted and/or compiled programming languages. Experience with the interpreted language R a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and skills and to meet project objectives and deadlines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience with SQL and/or ArcGIS is a plus.
- Experience in any of the following fields would be a plus: climate change, weather forecasting, remote sensing, crop science, animal husbandry.
- Knowledge of the application of probabilistic modeling to (re)insurance a plus.
