Job Description

This engineer position is responsible for developing, enhancing, and managing the vulnerability component and overall model performance of Verisk Extreme Event Solutions’ water peril catastrophe models, which cover worldwide regions and perils, including storm surge and precipitation-induced flooding. General responsibilities include identifying these perils' impact on the built environment, including physical damage that can result in monetary loss to buildings/infrastructure, contents, and loss of use (downtime). In this role, you will work closely with a team of structural engineers, hydrologists/hydraulic engineers, atmospheric scientists, statisticians, and specialists in financial application to perform probabilistic risk assessments for the built environment, and present and explain results to internal stakeholders and external clients. The candidate is expected to be a highly motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, and an independent worker, and a collective team player.

Responsibilities

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

As a member of our Atmospheric Perils Vulnerability Team, your day-to-day responsibilities will include the following:

  • Data acquisition and analysis to understand building inventory and its vulnerability to atmospheric-based hazards in multiple regions worldwide
  • Analytical analyses and research aimed towards the development of vulnerability functions and monetary loss curves for structural and non-structural building and infrastructure components subjected to flood (coastal and precipitation induced) hazards for several regions of interest worldwide
  • Implementation of research into Verisk Extreme Event Solutions’ portfolio risk analysis models, including programming loss simulation codes and analysis tools, and probabilistic assessment validation
  • Use of GIS tools for data visualization and analysis
  • Real-time and virtual building damage assessments due to natural catastrophes during and after significant events
  • Preparation and presentation of work at staff internal and client external meetings as well as technical writing for internal and external publications and client-facing documentation

Qualifications

About You and How You Can Excel in This Role

  • Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or other relevant fields
  • Experience in performance-based design, probabilistic and stochastic risk assessment and modeling, and reliability theory with applications to the field of structural engineering
  • Strong background in construction practices as it relates to flood vulnerability, and on the effects of water damage on structures
  • Knowledge of structural design
  • Excellent proficiency in C/C , MATLAB, R, and/or Python
  • Demonstrated data mining skills (SQL and/or statistical analysis)
