Position Summary
VMG is seeking a qualified Jewish Rabbi to provide supplemental pastoral services to the United States Air Force Chaplain Corps at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) and designated chapels. This position supports Jewish interment services and associated administrative responsibilities in coordination with the ANC USAF Chaplaincy Office.
This is a contract position for up to 40 ceremonial units per year, requiring flexibility, responsiveness, and knowledge of military honors and Jewish liturgical tradition. The Rabbi will serve in an essential pastoral capacity to support bereaved military families and honor fallen service members in accordance with Jewish customs and military protocol.
Key Responsibilities:
Funeral and Liturgical Duties
- Officiate up to 40 annual funeral services and committals for deceased veterans and their families.
- Conduct personalized Jewish interment services in chapels or at graveside, consistent with the practices of the Jewish Welfare Board and Aleph Institute.
- Coordinate closely with the USAF Honor Guard, ANC staff, and Next-of-Kin to prepare for and deliver services that reflect religious fidelity and military dignity.
- Participate in military funeral training sessions and use ANC-provided resources including stationary and ceremony coordination tools.
Pastoral and Administrative Support
- Maintain consistent communication with ANC Chaplain Corps staff, responding to funeral notifications within the same business day.
- Contact NOK at least one week in advance of assigned services and provide condolence letters post-service.
- Upload required documentation and service reports to the designated ANC platform within two business days.
Professional Conduct and Military Protocol
- Adhere to military customs and courtesies and conduct all services in accordance with Air Force Handbook 1 (AFH1) and AFPAM 34-1202.
- Observe the rules regarding privileged communication, and complete SAPR, Cyber Awareness, and Family Advocacy training per USAF standards.
- Serve as a respectful and professional representative of the Jewish faith and VMG at all times.
Qualifications
- Must be a validly ordained Jewish Rabbi in good standing.
- Possess ecclesiastical endorsement from the Aleph Institute or Jewish Welfare Board – Jewish Chaplains Council.
- Knowledge of or experience with military funeral honors and protocol is strongly preferred.
- Proficient in written and spoken English and capable of using Microsoft Office tools.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and pass a background check for ANC access.
Work Schedule and Location
- Primarily Monday–Friday, 0800–1600, excluding federal holidays.
- Services performed at:
- Arlington National Cemetery
- Fort Myer Old Post Chapel and Memorial Chapel
- United States Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery
- Flexibility required; interments are scheduled 1–3 weeks in advance with potential 12-hour notice for emergencies.
Compensation
Competitive rate per ceremonial unit. Annual limit of 40 units. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
