Fish Culture Worker
Salisbury Fish Culture Station, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department
Pay Grade: 14 Effective Date: 10/14/24 – 4/1/25
Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM M-F
Class Definition:
Fish culture and maintenance work at an introductory level for the Department of Fish & Wildlife. Propagation and care of fish at a fish culture station from egg to sexually mature adults. This is a temporary, summer position. Duties are performed under the supervision of a Fish Culture Station Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor or Fish Culture Specialists.
Examples of Work:
The following will make up 75% of work duties: Administers feed to fish using techniques appropriate to a determined regimen. Observes and reports any problems with feed utilization or acceptance which may require adjustments. Assists hatchery staff with fish sorting, handling, and spawning. Participates in preventive maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment. Perform grounds maintenance such as painting and lawn care. Assists with fish loading, transporting, and stocking. The following will make up 25% of work duties: Cleans and maintains fish rearing units and raceways. This includes periodic brushing of raceways, oxygen diffusers, screens, and baffles. Vacuuming of concentrated fish waste takes place weekly. A team of two removes waste with a 600 gallon vacuum trailer and transports it to 3,000-gallon staging tanks. Vacuuming efforts are part of a trial to reduce effluent nutrient levels.
Environmental Factors:
Duties are performed primarily at a fish culture station, both indoors and outdoors in all seasons, but with field trips for stocking purposes. A valid driver's license is required. Significant physical labor is involved in both fish culture and maintenance activities. Appropriate gear and personal protective equipment will be provided.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of fish culture principles and practices is preferred but not required. Awareness of mechanical maintenance and repair techniques is preferred but not required. Ability to operate and safely use hand and power tools for the maintenance of vehicles, buildings and equipment is preferred but not required. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to maintain a safe work environment.
Minimum Qualifications Valid Driver’s license. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in fish culture or related fields. Applicable/related work experience. Lawn care experience. Farm related experience. Safety related training.
