Description

Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), a national leader in restorative justice and environmental law, invites applications for a Visiting Professor of Law to join our Center for Justice Reform Clinic (CJRC) for a one-year visitorship. The CJRC is a part of the Center for Justice Reform – an internationally recognized program which exists to transform the ways communities engage with each other, respond to harm, and pursue justice. Growing out of VLGS’ immigration clinic, the CJRC is the only removal defender and one of the largest immigration legal service providers in Vermont.

The faculty member’s duties include teaching clinic classes year-round to juris doctor and masters students and supervising those students in their work on clinic cases and other projects. Clinic faculty identify client intake priorities, case assignments, and collaborate with project partners in need of law/policy assistance. Faculty train and guide students to provide direct client services under their supervision, as well as policy, legal, and educational assistance to partners. The Visiting Professor will work closely with the Director of the CJRC to implement and administer law and policy programs which supports students to: (1) provide meaningful direct services to Vermont’s justice involved citizen and noncitizen populations through postconviction relief/expungement, preparation of presentencing mitigation reports, and providing representation before immigration courts and immigration enforcement operations; (2) provide humanitarian immigration assistance to Vermont’s noncitizen population fleeing persecution, survivors of criminal activity and/or severe trafficking, vulnerable young persons, and more; and (3) identify policy and advocacy opportunities to challenge the retributive responses on which our criminal and immigration systems are built. The Visiting Professor will join a vibrant and supportive clinical community at VLGS.

Desired start date is August 19, 2024; the precise start date is flexible. The selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to restorative justice, immigrants’ rights, and criminal justice reform. There is a strong preference for candidates with multiple years of experience in immigration and/or criminal defense work. Strong preference for candidates with multilingual language skills. The candidate must be a licensed attorney with at least three years of experience who is active and a member in good standing in Vermont or has the ability to waive into Vermont for bar licensing purposes. The candidate must demonstrate excellent communication, collaboration, and managerial skills. Candidates should demonstrate experience with or interest in teaching and supervision.

In addition to teaching, VLGS faculty engage with other professionals and the public to contribute to the intellectual exchange of ideas, improve the law, and educate the public about the law, with an eye towards social justice. VLGS is in South Royalton, Vermont, a small town on the bank of the beautiful White River. Less than thirty minutes away lie the amenities of the adjacent communities of Hanover, NH (home to Dartmouth College) and Lebanon, NH. Burlington, VT, Boston, MA, and Montreal, QC, are all within a three-hour drive. The CJRC conducts much of its case activity from offices in downtown Burlington. Clinical teaching and other faculty responsibilities take place on the South Royalton campus.
