English Speaking Language Tutor
Part-Time, Temporary, 9-month term per year
BASIC FUNCTION
Serves as a dedicated and dynamic ESL Tutor to support students in developing English language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Provides individual and group tutoring sessions to both in-person and remote students, focusing on academic and industry-specific English skills for apprenticeship and workforce development courses.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and implement personalized ESL learning plans tailored to meet the diverse needs of Vermont State University students from various majors and educational backgrounds.
- Provide individualized and small group tutoring sessions in English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
- Assist students in understanding course content and improving academic language proficiency.
- Develop and adapt tutoring strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and language abilities.
- Utilize online platforms and tools to support remote tutoring sessions.
- Collaborate with the AD of Multilingual Student Services and faculty to align tutoring with course objectives.
- Proactively connect multilingual students with relevant campus resources, including Advising, Academic Support, Career Development, Wellness, and other support services to promote their academic and personal success.
- Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student progress.
- Encourage a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direct supervision received from the Assistant Director of Multilingual Student Services.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in English, Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field with two to four years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in English, Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field with two to four years experience in ESL education for adolescents and/or adults e, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Familiarity with ESL standardized assessment instruments for evaluating language proficiency and progress.
- Strong understanding of diverse cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of ESL learners.
- Knowledge of effective ESL curriculum design and instructional strategies.
Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in educational software and technology, with a preference for Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple responsibilities.
Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing work processes.
- Ability to integrate technology into instruction and provide remote or in-person, one-on-one or group tutoring support.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet individual and group learning needs.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
Location: Williston with occasional travel to other campuses.
