Location: Burlington or Woodstock

Dates: June 16-July 10 or July 14-August 7

Schedule: Monday through Thursday 8:00 – 4:30

Weekly compensation: $420

Age requirement: 15-17

Who We Are

VYCC’s Conservation Program engages young people in hands-on projects that benefit
Vermont’s environment and communities. Conservation Crew Members are essential to
the success of any Conservation Crew and their efforts have a significant impact on
habitat, water quality, and outdoor recreation in Vermont.

With a 40-year history in the state, VYCC crews have completed thousands of
conservation projects. Corps Members work and learn together in a collaborative crew
environment where they gain skills, build community and have a positive impact on the
land. Projects range from trail building to infrastructure improvement at State Parks,
sustainable forestry to invasive plant management and more. In every case, Corps
Members receive paid training and support from VYCC staff. The experience is
immersive and physically demanding. With that challenge also comes tremendous
personal reward. For young people passionate about climate resiliency, joining VYCC is
a great opportunity to steward the environment while also developing valuable
leadership skills.

A successful Conservation Crew Member is someone who rises to new challenges with
a positive attitude and works well on a team. We look for hard-working individuals
who will demonstrate their passion for environmental stewardship and public service
through a commitment to VYCC’s mission. Strong candidates will bring excitement for
the outdoors and learning new skills.

What You Can Expect
Conservation Youth Crew Members engage in hands-on work that ranges from
maintaining trails, removing invasive species, to improving water quality. Crew
Members learn to use hand tools and work as a team. This program also includes an
educational component which will have lessons relating to land, conservation, and
personal development. If you are excited to work on conservation projects in fields,

forests, and parks while improving natural places for recreation, this opportunity is for
you!

Conservation Youth Crews complete projects in one of two geographic areas:
Burlington, and Woodstock. Conservation Youth Crews operate in 4-week sessions.

  • Burlington Crew: June 16th –July 10th
  • Woodstock Crew: July 14th –August 7th

What We’ll Expect from You
Crew Member Duties
  • Foster teamwork by working well with fellow Crew Members
  • Maintain regular, effective communication with Crew Leaders and crew; engage
with feedback to help set goals, assess growth, and celebrate progress
  • Challenge yourself to engage in new experiences and ideas; participate fully in all
crew activities and education
  • Support emotional and physical safety in the crew environment
  • Follow VYCC principles and policies
  • Participate in the daily tasks of your crew as you work on your project, doing the
work to the best of your abilities
  • Follow safety guidelines for your project


Required Qualifications

  • Be 15 years old at the start of the position
  • A desire to make a positive impact in Vermont communities
  • Willingness to be part of a team made up of diverse individuals
  • Openness to meeting new people, working hard outside, providing and receiving
feedback, learning, and growing
  • Communicate clearly and effectively
  • Know how to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and socially
  • Ability to adapt to change and move outside of comfort zones

Weekly Schedule
Members serve Monday-Thursday, 8 hours/day. The hours are 8:00AM to 4:30PM.

Work Environment

Corps Members spend most of their time outdoors, working with their crew while also

interacting with project sponsors, community members, and VYCC staff.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Weekly stipend: $420
  • Potential to earn high school or college credit (ask for more information during
the interview)

  • Environmental education and leadership development curriculum
  • Resume-writing workshop and job placement support from VYCC’s Sr.
