Job Overview

An Automotive Instructor is sought to facilitate instructor-led training courses for advanced automotive service technicians. This role requires a highly motivated individual who is ready to embrace new challenges and can work independently, including engaging in self-guided study to stay updated with the latest technology. Previous experience in a dealership and as an instructor or facilitator is preferred.


Required Skills

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess the following skills:

  • Minimum of two years of automotive technician experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of intricate automotive systems.
  • Advanced diagnostic skills for automotive systems.
  • Proficiency in using technical diagnostic equipment, such as:
    • Scan Tools
    • Lab Scopes
    • Digital Volt-Ohm Meters (DVOMs)
    • Air Conditioning Recycling Equipment
    • Vibration Diagnostic Equipment
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with customers and colleagues in a team environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including familiarity with the internet, Microsoft Office, and email.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations and environments.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Desired Skills

While not mandatory, the following skills are highly preferred:

  • ASE/GM Master Technician Certification.
  • Two years of experience as an automotive instructor.
  • Previous experience in a dealership setting.

Educational Requirements

Candidates should meet one of the following educational criteria:

  • An Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or successful completion of a formal Automotive Technology Program, along with a high school diploma.
  • Alternatively, four years of automotive technician experience with a high school diploma may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Work Environment

The role involves working in both classroom and shop/lab settings. Key aspects include:

  • Exposure to automotive fumes, fluids, noise, and other hazards in shop/lab areas, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and head protection.
  • Classroom duties may involve standing, sitting, walking, and occasional lifting (overhead and waist level) as well as frequent near-vision use for reading and computer tasks.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the following physical capabilities:

  • Frequent activities such as sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Ability to manipulate objects and move materials weighing up to 35 pounds regularly, including automotive components and equipment.
  • Less frequent requirements for moving heavier materials (over 35 pounds) with assistance from lifting equipment.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination are essential for over 50% of the work period, particularly in shop/lab areas and while operating office equipment.
