What are the responsibilities and job description for the Advanced Development Engineer position at Vertiv?
Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the development of new products; work in a cross-functional development or advanced development group; manage a variety of tasks and activities in this dynamic environment; and solve complex problems where no precedence exists.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct advanced development tasks to inform NPDI teams designing new cooling systems for high density computer rooms.
- Collaborate across the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, as well as production and offering teams. Work with these teams for design reviews, meeting cost metrics, and brainstorming around customer pain points.
- Perform a variety of engineering calculations using traditional engineering methods to verify design requirements, which may include stress calculations, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
- Develop solutions to complex problems where little or no precedence exists - the use of ingenuity and creativity is regularly required.
- Participate in identification of cost reduction opportunities and in the design and development of cost reduction changes.
- Build prototypes to support the development of product design.
- Plan and oversee proof-of-concept testing, then utilize the results to validate or modify designs, control methods, and analytical models.
- Compile reports and design guidelines.
- Scout technologies that could be implemented into Vertiv cooling systems. Sources could be suppliers, university researchers, startup companies, etc.
- Support Vertiv activities with University-Industry collaborations.
- Interact with employees, outside vendors and suppliers as needed.

Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or directly related degree at minimum.
- Demonstrated record of meeting deadlines and project goals
- Understanding of electrical schematic and pneumatic drawings (P&ID)
- Understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
- Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment independently and/or as a member of a dynamic team; offer and receive constructive criticism.
- Demonstrated history of delivering quality products to market with understanding and respect for phases of the product development process
- Excellent project management skills and communication skills
- Experience with 3D CAD software, preferred CREO 4.0 and greater
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Preferred:
- Experience with analytical performance models
- Experience with 2-Phase heat transfer fluids, including “natural” refrigerants
- Experience with 1-phase and/or 2-phase Liquid Cooling technologies
- Knowledge of psychometric chart and refrigeration cycles
- Basic knowledge of CFD and/or FEA software, preferred Ansys
- Understanding of manufacturing limitations, break sheet metal and formed copper tubes
