What are the responsibilities and job description for the Application Engineer, Thermal position at Vertiv?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Application Engineer, Thermal provides pre-sales technical expertise to the sales team and customers during the sales process. This support is specific to Controls including iCOM unit level and Teamwork controls, system control schemes for coordination of multiple Vertiv thermal products, and iCOM-S Data Hall and System Controls. This role requires familiarity with the entire portfolio of Thermal Management products and cooling system operation.
The role works with the Director Thermal Sales, Liquid Cooling to construct, launch, and maintain a tool that allows local sales engineers to access and distribute application control reference design packets. This technical documentation consists of airflow diagrams with critical components and end devices, field wiring diagrams, unit level sequence of operations, points list, system level sequence of operations, system level wiring diagrams, and recommended sensor locations. The application engineer will need to adjust/revise specific documents to allow the packet to reflect specific project requirements. This role also provides support to the sales team, other application engineers, and directly with customers via remote presentations, conference calls, email, and via on-site visits. This support may or may not have planned agendas for the engagements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical support via remote webcast meetings, conference calls, and in person. After hours support may be needed in emergency situations.
- Lead and deliver Vertiv Controls Hour internal webcast to increase overall sales force technical competency
- Create and manage library of reference design templates for common Control applications for all products in the Vertiv Thermal Management portfolio. These reference design templates will include unit/system airflow diagrams, unit field connection drawings, unit/system sequences of operations, unit/system guide specifications, unit/system points list, and system level wiring diagrams.
- Create and manage web-based tool to facilitate selection and distribution of appropriate reference design template for Vertiv sales team to download/provide to customers in coordination with equipment selections.
- Modify documents within reference design templates to match customer needs.
- Provide guidance on sensor location and field wiring pathways for specific projects.
- Assist in developing clear, concise, and technically sound Controls support documents for customer review and acceptance based on customer requirements and/or RFP's, ensuring proper scope and required technical specifications are met.
- Apply Quote Configurator tool to provide comprehensive quote support.
- Review project specifications, drawings, RFPs to determine best solutions for customer critical space needs.
- Provide leadership in HVAC controls and BMS integration to Vertiv thermal management equipment.
- Participate in new product development projects.
- Other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Engineering; Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Science preferred.
- 3 years relevant work experience.
- Experience in advanced HVAC controls and BMS protocols.
- Strong understanding of data center infrastructure design objectives, performance factors, and physical requirements.
- Ability to read and understand network topologies and electrical schematics.
- Ability to generate sequences of operation, wiring diagrams, points lists, and airflow system diagrams.
- Proficiency in presenting technical material to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and AutoCAD programs
- Ability to plan and execute local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN) based on customer needs.
- Ability to draft/create/markup networking diagrams.
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of commercial infrastructure design objectives, performance factors, and physical requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and one-line diagrams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant industrial experience preferred.
- Experience in technical scope review and formal proposal development preferred.
- Knowledge of ASHRAE, Data Center guidelines and Up time Institute regulations and best practices preferred.
