As a Surgery Veterinary Technician, You Will
- Assist in patient procedures using knowledge of anesthesia and analgesia-related protocols and procedures, including formulating anesthetic plans tailored to individual patient needs.
- Monitor anesthesia, troubleshoot anesthetic complications, and make appropriate interventions.
- Intravenous catheter placement, endotracheal intubation, and anesthetic equipment use and maintenance.
- Perform physical exam; accurately counts heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate, and effort.
- Understand normal vital parameters and alert doctor when abnormal.
- Set up intravenous fluids and CRI's.
- Continuous expansion of knowledge and skillset: advanced anesthetic skills including epidurals, difficult airway intubation, and critical case management.
- Operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors.
- Comfortable with medical math.
- Ability to take patient through entire procedure from start to finish (pre-op, monitoring, post-op, and recovery)
- Manage appointments, obtain histories, medical record keeping, invoicing, patient discharges, etc.
- Disconnect and connect patients from intravenous fluids aseptically. Monitor patient response to fluid therapy including signs of overload.
- If you are not a RVT, you must have a strong foundational understanding and be able to perform the responsibilities of a surgery veterinary technician including (but not limited to):
- Venipuncture
- Placing IV Catheters
- Prepping patients for surgery
- Calculating drugs, CRI's, & fluid rates
- Inducing, monitoring, and recovering anesthesia patients
- Scrubbing in for soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries
- Cleaning/wrapping/sterilizing surgical instruments
- Administration of Medications (IV or other methods)
