What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cardiac Cath Lab Tech (MIT) position at Veterans Health Administration?
The Kansas City VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization). This position is full time at 40 hours per week in the Medical Sub-Speciality Service Line.
Basic Requirements:
Grade Determinations:
GS-9.
In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 full performance level, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
*5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.
Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years cardiology experience. Applicants with the following certifications from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) are highly preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). The selected employee will be required to receive these certifications prior to assuming clinical responsibilities and ensure current certifications after employment is maintained.

Responsibilities:
**** THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS EXTENDED UNTIL ALL POSITIONS ARE FILLED****Medical Instrument Technicians (Cardiac Cath) at this level functions proficiently in all aspects of the Cardiac Cath Lab.
- They scrub, circulate, monitor, and operate equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including intraaortic balloon pump therapy for critical ill patients.
- Assure medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration
- Have a functional knowledge of the cardiac medications use, appropriate doses, and side effects.
- Assist with training and mentoring other technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiology fellows
- Assist the cardiology manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.
- Work with physician to complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including: LHC, RHC, PTCAs,
Stent placement, IABP, IVUS, pressure wires, percardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures,
peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement and AICD placement - Monitors the progression of procedures requiring independent judgment and anticipate need to provide specific instrument and/or catheters
- Cardiac Cath Lab Technician has the intimate knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function
- Responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies
- They are responsible for ordering all Cath Lab specific supplies including catheters, balloons, stents, sheaths, etc
- Coordinate all communication with vendors and schedule their visits
