This position is located at the Mather facility and operates shuttles and other vehicles used for transportation of patients between facilities throughout VA Northern California Health Care System. This position falls under the general supervision of the Supervisory Motor Vehicle Operator in the Transportation Section of Supply Management Service.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/07/2025.

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid, state issued Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) WITH Air Brake AND Passenger Endorsements. (Do not provide copy, we cannot accept pictures. Driver's License will be verified during the interview process.)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Physical and mental coordination and concentration is required for starting, stopping, driving, turning, and otherwise safe operation of a motor vehicle. Moderate physical effort lifting to 40 pounds unassisted and occasional handling of objects greater than 40 pounds with assistance. Physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment because safety chains, tow-bars, and hooks must be lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.

Responsibilities:

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Operation of shuttles used for Patient Transportation, including 16-40 passenger buses, equipped with wheelchair lifts, Dual Use Vehicles (DUV), and Mobile Medical Units (MMU) along with various other vehicles.
  • Operation of gasoline, diesel, hybrid gas-electric, and electric motor vehicles including grounds utility carts, passenger cars, station wagons, vans, pick-ups, and panel, stake or open bed trucks over 26,001 to 32,000-pound GVWR capacities.
  • Maintains vehicles, both interior and exterior, in a clean and serviceable condition; inspects vehicles for such items as coolant or water, oil, gas, grease and battery liquids, and that diesel exhaust fluid reservoirs are within safe operational limits.
  • Ensures that vehicle is compliant with safety equipment and other operating equipment such as lights, signals, windshield wipers, and that passenger restraint systems are in good operating condition.
