Summary

The Social Worker (Program Coordinator) is located in the Mental Health Service Line Team Z, specializing in the treatment of serious mental illness (SMI). Clinical services provided on Team Z include empirically supported interventions for adult patients with SMI including individual, couple / family, and group psychotherapy, diagnostic interviews, assessment, treatment coordination, vocational assessment and rehabilitation services and psychiatric management.

Major duties include, but are not limited to :

Program Management Responsibilities :

  • Duties include directing, administering, and managing all aspects of the program, including comprehensive planning, developing and implementing programs, policies and procedures; determining program needs; overseeing the type, quality and quantity of services provided; setting priorities; and establishing short- and long-range program goals, initiatives, and direction.
  • Incumbent will provide screening assessment to ascertain appropriateness of TEAM Z referrals and consult with referral source within both Mental Health and Primary Care, and Rehabilitation and Extended Care Service Lines. Will deliver highly specialized services for veterans and their families to help them address the immediate and long-term effects of acute psychiatric crisis and / or exacerbation of chronic mental illness.
  • Provides consultation to Mental Health Service Line and the other service lines in the facility regarding referral process to TEAM Z program. Directs, administers, and manages all aspects of the TEAM Z program. Triages and assigns referrals for services in a systematic way and makes treatment recommendations. Establishes program goals, initiatives, and direction within the limitations of available staff and budget requirements. Monitors for the provision of services to be delivered in a manner that meets VA guidelines and standards. Monitors staff workload and documentation requirements and distributes work fairly while keeping in mind staff interests and areas of special training.
  • Supervisory :

  • The incumbent supervises a group of social workers performing work at the GS 12 levels and below, including advanced practice social workers. The incumbent provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the units.
  • The incumbent performs administrative and program coordination with multi-objective programs consisting of treatment, training and education, ensuring that services are provided in a timely, comprehensive and coordinated manner. The incumbent determines and recommends budgetary needs of designated social work programs.
  • The incumbent exercises supervisory and Coordinator authorities, provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work and / or the staff of the units and areas assigned. The incumbent provides clinical supervision to staff to meet state requirements for social work licensure.

  • Patient Care :

  • The incumbent will have the ability to conduct psychosocial assessments of a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, education, and other diversified backgrounds. The incumbent will have basic knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological), and the differential influences of the environment, society and culture. They are directly responsible for the coordination of all aspect of services for the TEAM Z Program including those conducted by staff and trainees. Receives and assess all referrals to TEAM Z Program
  • The incumbent will have the ability to work with patients and families who are experiencing emotional, medical and social problems utilizing individual, group and family counseling skills. The incumbents work to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patient and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance as needed. The incumbent will independently provide assessments, brief interventions and consultation in the area general mental health diagnoses assigned, substance use disorders, etc. The incumbent has basic knowledge of psychosocial treatment modalities, ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques.

  • Qualifications

    Basic Requirements :

  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education : Must possess a Master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Licensure : Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • English Language Proficiency : Candidates must be proficient in written and spoken English to be appointed.
  • Grade Determinations : Social Worker (Program Coordinator) GS-0185-12

    1) Experience / Education.

    One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum / course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

    2) Licensure / Certification.

    Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

    3) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

    In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs (Note : a separate document with written demonstration of KSAs must be included with application, see required documents section) :

    a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.

    b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and / or practice guidelines for the program.

    c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.

    d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).

    e) Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
