This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirements: Interventional Radiology Fellowship

Physical Requirements: Physical involvement to do the work of a Radiologist.

This position is located at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI. In addition to the clinical practice of diagnostic and interventional radiology, the Staff Radiologist performs other duties which includes quality assurance, performance improvement, oversight of technical quality, education of staff and trainees, tumor board and other multidisciplinary conferences, committee assignments, and other activities that support clinical operations, mission, values, and goals of the John D. Dingell VA Health Care System. The Detroit VA is affiliated with the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and is a key member of the Detroit Medical Center complex. The Staff Radiologist will be working with a great team of radiologists and technologists, support staff, and will enjoy the following new, top-of-the-line, medical imaging systems being installed currently at the Detroit VA: a 3T PET-MRI, a 3T wide-bore MRI, a dual source multidetector CT, XR systems, 2 Fluoroscopy systems, and an Angiography suite. Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Assures that the procedural indication is adequate (e.g. based on American College of Radiology appropriateness criteria) and that physician related work-up, periprocedural and post-procedural follow-up care are of adequate quality, patient centric and safe. This includes but is not limited to, collaboration and good communication with the Emergency Department, Subspecialty Services and/or Clinics, potentially admitting patients to the hospital, caring for the patient as inpatients and/or following the patient clinically.
  • Performs vascular and interventional radiological procedures in a safe, cost sensitive/resource optimizing, technically adequate and generally peer accepted manner that meets general national standards and patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Participates in on-call physician coverage to meet patient care responsibilities in Vascular and interventional radiology.
  • Exercises corporate citizenship and meets high standard of responsiveness, collegial professional interaction, and the core tenets of mutual respect in all professional encounters.
  • Participates in development and implementation of systems redesigns projects, quality improvements and assurance programs of VIR services as well as initiatives designed to improve overall quality through evidence-based medicine and peer review.
  • Participates and facilitates implementation of modern care, utilization of new technologies and new procedures. This includes but is not limited to potentially required personal technical training and education, preparation, review, and finalization of the corresponding standard of care protocols, related and adequate staff instructions and teaching, related literature searches as well as topic and procedure related presentations for appropriate audiences.
  • Possible coverage of diagnostic radiology readings as needed.
Patient Care:
  • Interact with patients to obtain relevant clinical history and physical exam findings within the scope of radiology practice.
  • Contact clinical providers as relevant to assure effective patient care, discuss evaluation, management, follow-up and other aspects of coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Make timely and definitive notification of time-sensitive results and/or results that have major clinical significance.
Medical Staff Functions:
  • Participate in Imaging and general medical staff meetings, committee assignments, tumor board, compliance and other components of an organized medical staff.
  • Support academic affiliations in technologist, resident and other teaching programs that involve the Imaging Service.
  • Provide clinical experience, cognitive development, and other aspects of effective teaching.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-4:00PM
-May be required to rotate evenings/weekend and on-call

Salary : $1,000 - $350,000
