Job Summary
- Veterinary Specialists of Hanover is a specialty referral hospital that offers high quality veterinary specialty medicine in Mechanicsville, VA. We are currently looking for someone to join our surgical team!
General Accountabilities
- Veterinary Assistants assist Veterinarians with patient care and interact with and educate clients.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Assist Veterinarians in patient care and medical treatments including but not limited to: medication administration, processing in-house and reference lab samples, sterile surgical preparation, sterile OR techniques, patient care, taking radiographs, filling prescriptions, cleaning and maintaining surgical instruments/OR
- Gentle and compassionate care of patients.
- Provide proper restraint for veterinarians/vet technicians
- Able to work patiently with clients in varying emotional states.
- Check in clients, take medical history, obtain patient vital signs.
- Client education.
- Ensure exam rooms and treatment area are stocked with supplies as needed
- Assist in cleaning the hospital including but not limited to: laundry, floors, taking out the trash and recycling, cleaning treatment areas, operating room, exam rooms, kennels, bathrooms and kitchen.
- Answering the phone, making patient appointments, keyboard/data entry, fax, email, cashiering, keeping lobby area tidy and offering a compassionate and client and patient-focused office environment.
- Relay appropriate information to/from clients to doctors and/or management.
- Maintain proper documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Computer skills: Able to use Windows based computer systems, cornerstone, word processing, email, web search and other skills needed to effectively use the practice management software program.
- Moving animals from cage to cage, floor to floor, room to room. Restraining animals up to 200 pounds intermittently, lifting animals up to 50 pounds and lifting animals over 50 pounds with help
- Other: Assistants must possess good critical thinking and problem solving skills, compassion, a positive attitude, excellent communication skills and teamwork skills.
- Multi-tasking and accepting constructive criticism is essential. Punctuality is a must.
Job Qualifications
- Education: Training through state-approved programs or equivalent training under experienced pet care provider
- Experience: Specialty surgical experience required
