The Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle (VSCS) is a 24-hour Emergency and Critical Care and Specialty hospital. We offer a collaborative approach to veterinary medicine. We support Emergency and Critical Care, Neurology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology and Radiology, all in one hospital. SUMMARY OF JOB SPECIFICATION AND ROLE 
The primary role of the Oncology Veterinary Technician is performing treatments and care of stable outpatients and hospitalized patients, while providing exceptional client service    
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS    
    • Support the VSC of Seattle mission of enriching lives by providing exceptional care to our patients, their families, and the referral community. 
     
    • Use a Fear Free approach to patient handling and stay up to date with hospital safety protocols and core values. 
     
    • Use EzyVet and Smartflow to maintain pet parent and patient records according to hospital protocols. 
     
    • Conscientious for prevention of nosocomial or zoonotic diseases per hospital protocol 
     
    • Basic knowledge of injectable medications commonly used in oncology (antiemetics, steroids, etc.)
     
    • Basic knowledge of oral medications commonly used in oncology (antiemetics, steroids, NSAIDs, etc.)
     
    • Basic understanding of chemotherapeutic agents and treatment protocols.
     
    • Set up for patient procedures such as chemotherapy, tissue sampling, and other diagnostics.
     
    • Appreciation and understanding for hazardous waste handling practices (in the event of a chemotherapy spill, patient bodily fluids, etc.)
     
    • Demonstrate proper use of chemotherapy PPE and adhere to chemotherapy safety protocols.
     
    • Proficient venipuncture skills.
     
    • Collect urine free catch or cystocentesis. 
     
    • Perform laboratory procedures (blood smear, platelet count, PCV/TS)
     
    • Communicates updates, lab work results, treatment plans with the client and assesses the clients understanding during and after appointments
     
    • Appreciation and understanding of extravasation.
     
    • Interpret CBC for chemotherapy monitoring
     
    • Taking care of animals remains with dignity, respect and in a timely manner
     
    • Demonstrates proper checks and balances system for calculating and dispensing chemotherapy. 
     
    • Operate medical and laboratory equipment (centrifuge, doppler, x-ray machine, etc.)

We can help! VSC of Seattle can help you build a relationship with one of our board-certified specialists who will mentor you throughout the learning process. You will be able to attend Intern focused in-hospital seminars, and we will even help with the financial aspect of obtaining your VTS.
