What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinarian position at Veterinary Urgent Care?
Job Title: Spectrum of Care Veterinarian Extraordinaire at Veterinary Urgent Care
Location: 1711 Telephone Road, Houston, Texas 77023 (Our *possibly* haunted veterinary clinic)
Are you a fearless veterinarian with a passion for helping animals and a high tolerance for controlled chaos aka spectrum of care medicine? Veterinary Urgent Care is on the hunt for a brave soul to join our fast-paced, low-cost, solution oriented practice that exists to serve the community and their pets.
Candidate Requirements:
We are looking for someone with a healthy dose of optimism when approaching cases and is willing to try when animals and their owners have limited options and finances. You will need to think quickly on your feet and multitask between routine cases (such as skin, ears, vaccines) while delegating stabilization for emergent cases (hit by car, dog attack, parvovirus) and eventually, perform those 3 surgeries that have been referred over. You prioritize performing the best medicine possible given the resources, finances, time and animal in front of you.
You will have the utmost respect for your support staff and be of the belief that y’all are two sides of a coin that cannot operate without each other. Our staff enjoy people who acknowledge their skill and allow them to do their job. They also have a deep desire to learn and appreciate veterinarians who are willing to teach them when the opportunity arises. (They also like snacks, but management can take care of that )
Lastly, you should be comfortable communicating with kind honesty. The majority of our clients love their pets, but sometimes lack the education of basic wellness recommendations for owning animals. In addition, sometimes their boss (me) does not have solutions to every problem and is open to constructive feedback about a variety of scenarios. This ultimately, gives you the ability to contribute to creative solutions for the clinic and community.
Job Summary:
Veterinary Urgent Care is located in an art deco veterinary clinic that was built in the 1930’s. This building has been an important part of the animal welfare community for almost a century and we are proud to continue the work it was built for. Paranormal experiences may or may not be a routine happening at this job, especially if you take a walk in the (spooky) woods in the back.
Our purpose is to create a safe space for all people and animals while providing the community with veterinary care to improve their lives and reduce discomfort and suffering of animals. The reality is that pet care is unaffordable for many, especially during the weekend and night hours. We seek to fill the gap between general practice and emergency 24 hour medicine both in terms of care and cost. To do this, we utilize well trained and dedicated staff and flexible financing options. We offer affordable care that heavily utilizes evidence based medicine and are dedicated to continuing our education to increase positive outcomes for pets and their people.
The work we do is important and makes a difference, however, it is emotionally, mentally and physically challenging. We are honest about our frustrations with the situations presented to us, but we do the best we can and are transparent about expectations and limitations with owners. We support each other and encourage being active about protecting our mental health with strategies including training in resiliency, communication, and coping skills (or take a walk in the spooky woods with the friendly ghosts). We go home at the end of the day knowing we gave every animal and owner a chance to make the best decision possible under the given circumstances.
Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent from an accredited program
Valid licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas
Ability to stay calm under pressure (we have Warheads in case of emergencies)
Comfortable with late-night, weekend and some holiday shifts - definitely cannot be afraid of the dark or the paranormal
Candidates who are likely to succeed at VUC have experienced the toils of shelter medicine and the chaos of ER medicine, however all experiences are welcome to apply
Bilingual (in Spanish) is a plus - however our technicians have our back too
New graduates are very much welcome and encouraged! Flexible mentorship training plans available
Benefits and Salary:
Negotiable salary depending on experience - starting at 125k/year production, negotiable with experience
Annual continuing education budget available - 3k/year
Paid costs for annual veterinary license renewal, AVMA PLIT insurance and membership and DEA license
Paid time off (PTO) - start out with 2 weeks/year
401k with match offered
Flexible scheduling available
Opportunities to advance and solve problems within the community
Increase the size of your friend group - even if they are from the afterlife
