The Street Transportation Department, Design, and Construction Management Division is seeking a motivated individual for our Materials Technician vacancy in the City of Phoenix Materials Laboratory. The primary function is to perform laboratory materials testing of average difficulty in the Street Transportation Department. The Materials Technician performs physical testing on construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, and soils on a daily basis to verify material properties against applicable specifications using industry standard methods.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge of laboratory management software is useful.
Knowledge of materials testing, properties, characteristics of materials, and standard detail and specifications.
Knowledge of City of Phoenix, Maricopa Association of Government, and Federal Aviation Administration specifications.
Able to perform arithmetic calculations to complete test following standard test methods.
Able to communicate orally with customers, clients, or the public in a face-to-face, one-on-one settings or using the telephone.
SALARY
Pay Range : $19.07 to $26.83 per hour.
Hiring Range : $19.07 to $22.08 per hour.

Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience in materials testing engineering work.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Working Conditions Require :
Lifting up to 50 pounds.
Working with chemicals.
Working irregular hours, second and / or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
Moving dirt, rock, sand, or other material from one place to another using a shovel, rake, or other tools.
Making precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintain static arm-hand position to use laboratory equipment.
Working in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements and dust.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus :
Experience with heavy construction and engineering materials.
Experience following standard test methods, procedures, and performing calculations.
Additional certifications in construction inspection and materials testing, including American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI), will be beneficial.
