JOB TITLE: Community Educator (Full-Time)
Vetri Community Partnership is seeking an engaging Community Educator who will work across VCP programs to lead cooking classes, recipe samplings, and nutrition education activities for kids, adults, and families across Philadelphia and Camden. The Community Educator works to inspire community members of all ages to include nutritious foods in meals for themselves and their families.
In addition to leading and supporting cooking classes in schools and in VCP's Teaching Kitchen, the Community Educator drives and operates VCP's Mobile Teaching Kitchen in the community to deliver programming in public spaces including food distributions and grocery stores.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead indoor and outdoor cooking and nutrition education activities for individuals and groups across the Philadelphia and Camden; Weekends and some evenings required
- Drive and operate VCP's Mobile Teaching Kitchens, our community nutrition vehicles, to/and from program delivery sites
- Prepare lessons for varying event structures and make on-site decisions regarding set-up and program delivery
- Participate in cross-program recipe development process and testing days
- Complete event report following all program activities tracking program outputs, expenses, and feedback
- Assist in the cleaning, inventory, and maintenance of VCP's Teaching Kitchen and a 3-truck fleet of Mobile Teaching Kitchens including fueling, scheduled service, and cleaning of both trucks and equipment
- Communicate effectively with supervisor, volunteers, co-educators, and site liaisons regarding logistics and scheduling
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
- Cooking confidence is required, knowledge of basic kitchen techniques a plus
- Teaching experience and/or experience working within community health is preferred
- Motivated to guide community members towards food exposure and an understanding of nutrition in an asset-based, non-judgmental manner
- Valid driver’s license required; must have a clean driving record for at least the past three years; Frequent travel to program sites in the Philadelphia area is required
- Can work consistently on Saturdays and in the out-of-school time hours
- Knowledge of and curiosity to continue learning about food, cooking, and related topics
- Comfortable providing cooking demonstrations in both indoor and outdoor settings within diverse communities
- Applicants with Spanish language skills are encouraged to apply
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate creative problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in or willingness to learn Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams is required
- Passion for VCP’s mission of nourishing minds, bodies, and communities with nutrition education through cooking
- Must be able to lift approximately 40 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods of time
- Successful completion of clearances including: PA Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History Check, and FBI Fingerprinting record
