Job Summary :
The Master of Science in Data Science Program (MSDS) invites candidates to apply for a oneyear term Assistant Professor position beginning August 2025 with the possibility of renewal contingent upon funding approval.
The MSDS program is a 12month program offering a rigorous curriculum aligned with advancements in data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Students may choose a Data Engineering concentration preparing them for careers as Machine Learning Engineers and Data Engineers. The program integrates stateoftheart education with a 9month industry internship allowing students to work with companies and organizations such as Meta PG&E and the City of San Francisco as well as academic institutions like UCSF and Stanford. Faculty members in the program are supported by a dedicated Data Institute that fosters connections between academia and industry advances research builds an inclusive data science community and trains future data scientists.
Job Responsibilities :
The successful candidate will teach graduate courses focusing on data engineering topics including databases data acquisition data lake houses data streaming processes data architecture advanced machine learning machine learning operations LLMs AI ethics and security AI entrepreneurship and AI engineering. They will also mentor practicum projects with companies. The typical teaching load is 24 units per year and the role includes service to the program and college.
Minimum Qualifications :
- Ph.D. by July 2025 in data engineering data science machine learning or a related field. Faculty backgrounds may include mathematics statistics computer science and engineering among others.
- A commitment to excellence in teaching within a culturally diverse environment.
- Strong record of universitylevel teaching and evidence of scholarship.
- Ability to reflect on equity and strategies for engaging BIPOC students.
- Understanding of and commitment to supporting the programs mission.
