Correctional Deputy : Eligible applicants for Correctional Deputy must possess a valid California Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) - Adul t Corrections Officer Core Course Certification .

  • Correctional Deputy Lateral : A Lateral candidate is an individual who is currently working in a California adult correctional facility as a correctional deputy or equivalent, has passed their probationary period, and has obtained their California STC - Adult Corrections Officer Core Course Certification.
  • Correctional Deputy Pre-Service : A Pre-Service candidate is an individual who holds a California STC - Adult Corrections Officer Core Course Certification and is currently not working in a law enforcement agency.
  • We are currently not accepting California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation applicants as Pre-Service / Lateral candidates.

    • Deputy Sheriff : Eligible applicants for Deputy Sheriff must possess a valid California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification or a California POST Waiver received from another state.

  • Deputy Sheriff Lateral : A Lateral candidate is an individual who is currently working as a sworn peace officer for a California law enforcement agency, has passed their probationary period, and has obtained his / her California Basic POST Certificate.
  • Deputy Sheriff Pre-Service : A Pre-Service candidate is an individual who has successfully graduated from a California POST-certified academy, holds an active California POST certification, and is not currently working as a California sworn peace officer.
  • Deputy Sheriff - Out of State : Out-of-state candidates who have obtained a basic academy certification from another state can contact California POST and apply for a POST waiver letter. The Sheriffs Office will accept that as valid certification to qualify as a pre-service candidate. We do not accept POST (or equivalent) certifications from other states.

    • EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Deputy Sheriff

    Class Concept

    Under general supervision, interprets and enforces the regulations and laws of the State of California; interprets and applies the legal methods and techniques of arrest, search and seizure; applies the principles of patrol and investigation; performs other related duties as required.

    The Deputy Sheriff is the journey level classification for sworn law enforcement positions in the Sheriff's Department. Incumbents perform a wide variety of law enforcement functions or concentrate on a few or single specialized activities. The Deputy Sheriff assignments consist of patrol, court services, contract agencies, resident posts in remote areas, jail facilities or specialized programs such as training, burglary prevention and community liaison. Incumbents occasionally supervise others in the completion of a specific task or project.

    Examples of Essential Duties

  • Patrol an assigned area to prevent crime, apprehend suspects, control traffic, enforce laws and regulations, make evictions, and post notices of auction.
  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations incident to arrests, suspected criminal activity and traffic accidents.
  • Appear and testify in court as to investigative findings and other activities incident to responsibility for law enforcement.
  • Serve various civil and criminal documents; prepare reports and return them to their original jurisdiction.
  • Effect custody and ensure safe storage of held property and evidence.
  • Prepare reports of daily activities as required.
  • Guard, control, supervise and transport inmates in detention facilities including preparation of required records relative to incarceration of prisoners, including booking, period of incarceration, disposition of inmate's personal property, and transfer or release of prisoners.
  • Participate in training of Sheriff's Department personnel; participate in the planning and implementation of various crime prevention and public relations programs in the community at large.
  • Assigned to special law enforcement details in narcotics, juvenile or other similar matters.

    • Recruiting Guidelines

    Education : Graduation from high school, attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test or possession of a certificate of proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education.

    Experience : None. Knowledge of : Federal, state and County codes and ordinances and department rules and regulations relating to law enforcement; modern approved principles and procedures of law enforcement work; court and evidence procedures; court decisions affecting law enforcement practices; the use of the English language and mathematical concepts typical of that derived from basic course work in these subjects at the high school level. Ability to : Read, and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances and general literature pertaining to law enforcement activities; analyze and interpret legal codes, police problems and criminal evidence; adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation; understand and follow written and verbal directions; maintain accurate records and prepare clear, concise and understandable reports; perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately; learn the use and care of small firearms; establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments; climb barriers, jump obstacles and perform strenuous physical activities, control resisting subjects with a minimum of force necessary to effect and arrest; read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.

    Other Requirements

    License / Certificate : Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

    Possession of a State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Certificate.

    Successful completion of a State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Academy.

    Note : If a period of three years has elapsed since employment as a full-time peace officer in California and / or completion of the P.O.S.T. Basic Academy, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency Examination administered by P.O.S.T. is required prior to employment.

    Citizenship : U.S. Citizenship must be obtained by time of appointment.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must meet the following State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements : Age : Applicants must be 20 years 9 months at the start of the academy. Vision : Applicants who wear glasses or hard contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20 / 40 correctable to 20 / 20. For soft contact lenses being worn for up to one year or more correctable to 20 / 20, there are no uncorrected requirements. Please note : Applicants must have normal peripheral fields and color vision. Hearing : Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 25dB frequencies of 500 to 6,000 in either ear. Hearing aides are not permitted to meet these requirements.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education : Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. examination.

    License : Possession of a valid California Drivers License

    Legality for Employment : Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.

    CORRECTIONAL DEPUTY I / II

    Certification : California Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) - Adult Corrections Officer Core Course Certification.
