Job Purpose
The Assistant Director of Charlottesville VIA Day Schools supports the Director in overseeing the daily operations and long-term planning for the JCH and CAAAS schools. This leadership role emphasizes excellence in student assessment, curriculum implementation, regulatory compliance, and individualized support for students with special needs. The Assistant Director collaborates closely with school leadership, special education teachers, and support staff to ensure a safe, supportive, and high-quality educational environment tailored to each learner’s needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Assessment:
- Oversee and coordinate student testing, including state-mandated assessments (e.g.,SOL, VAAP) and other academic assessments as needed
- Analyze assessment data to identify student needs and inform instructional practices
- Collaborate with Special Education Teachers to develop and implement individualized learning plans for students
Master Schedule:
- Assist in the development and implementation of the school's master schedule, ensuring alignment with curriculum requirements and student needs
- Coordinate student scheduling, considering individual learning plans and program requirements
Progress Monitoring and Reporting:
- Review student progress reports, ensuring timely and accurate completion
- Analyze progress data to identify trends and areas for improvement
- Collaborate with Special Education Teachers to address student needs and provide appropriate interventions
Curriculum Support and Training:
- Support the implementation of the school's curriculum, providing guidance and resources to teachers
- Coordinate and deliver professional development opportunities for staff on curriculum, instruction, and assessment
- Stay abreast of current research and best practices in education and special education
Compliance and Reporting:
- Assist in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations related to special education and school operations
- Oversee the preparation and submission of required reports to regulatory agencies
- Support the accreditation process, ensuring the school meets quality standards
- Ensure all required VDOE, VAISEF, VCPE, and CARF documentation and reports are complete, accurate, and submitted to the appropriate governing body according to the relevant timelines and deadlines
IEP Process:
- Participate in ISR, Pre-IEP, and IEP meetings, providing input on student needs and program development
- Monitor the implementation of IEPs, ensuring compliance with legal requirements
- Collaborate with special education staff to provide appropriate support and services to students with disabilities
Other Responsibilities:
- Proofread and review discharge and assessment reports for accuracy and completeness
- Assist with other administrative tasks as assigned by the Director of Charlottesville VIA Day Schools
- Assist with special projects as assigned
Position Type
This is a full-time position. The position may involve working with students who exhibit challenging behavior. Frequent travel across Charlottesville VIA locations is required.

Requirements
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Special Education from accredited school or university.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of special education.
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred.
- Program supervision experience preferred.
- Flexibility to travel/consult.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well through both spoken and written language.
- Proficient and knowledgeable in evidence-based special education practices, clinical and educational methods for autism spectrum disorders and related neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Demonstrate leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Valid Virginia teaching license required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
