Duties & Responsibilities:
Viavi Solutions is seeking an experienced controls / automation engineer to quicken the pace of experiments and new product development. The selected candidate will work with the R&D team to develop and prototype hardware and algorithms to control state-of-the-art optical coating manufacturing and metrology equipment, including:
Interface to intelligent controllers and hardware associated with vacuum coating technology, including power supplies, programmable logic controllers, distributed information systems, and remote sensors.
Develop customized sensor and control solutions using PC’s, single-board microcontrollers, and/or programmable logic controllers (PLC’s).
Modify existing PLC or HMI programs to accommodate new development or experimental configurations.
Rapid prototyping is a key element of the position, as well as good documentation and an ability to work with manufacturing engineering to transition successful prototypes to production. This position involves occasional travel including possible international site visits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interface controls and sensors to PLC and HMI software.
- Implement robust control algorithms for a manufacturing environment.
- Generate structured, well documented, and robust PLC and HMI code meeting project objectives.
- Assist with equipment troubleshooting.
- Lead, motivate others, and/or contribute to a team-work environment.
- Identify and implement process improvement opportunities.
- Work with multi-disciplined teams including R&D and Engineering.
Required Skills/Qualifications:
- PLC programming, especially Mitsubishi PLC and Siemens Step7
- HMI programming such as Delphi orLabVIEW
- Experience with digital controls, PID, motion control, oscilloscope, lock-in, sensors, etc.
- Industrial networking (Profibus, Ethernet, etc.)
- Read and understand electrical schematics and P&IDs
- Strong time management
- Ability to work effectively with R&D, Operations, Maintenance, and Contractors
- Ability to solve complex problems with effective solutions
- Candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change
- MATLAB, Python or equivalent rapid-scripting languages
- Experience with database construction and SQL queries
- Motor drive configuration and startup
- Wonderware interfacing
- Draw electrical schematics, for example using AutoCAD or Promis-E
- Windows PC, Linux administration
- Action oriented approach to problem solving
- Learn quickly, committed to continuous self-improvement
- BS in Computer / Electrical /Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Five or more years in a similar role
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
