Job Function
Reporting to the Technical Manager – Americas, the Technical Service Coatings Manager, Americas will be based out of Ashtabula, Ohio and will oversee and drive successful completion of customer application programs, technical service requests, color matching requests and resolution of customer complaints, assuring a high level of customer satisfaction. This role will coordinate technical reports to both internal and external customers and will work to convert opportunities and resolve issues in the most efficient means possible.

Job Function
Reporting to the Technical Manager – Americas, the Technical Service Coatings Manager, Americas will be based out of Ashtabula, Ohio and will oversee and drive successful completion of customer application programs, technical service requests, color matching requests and resolution of customer complaints, assuring a high level of customer satisfaction. This role will coordinate technical reports to both internal and external customers and will work to convert opportunities and resolve issues in the most efficient means possible.
Responsibilities
- Complies with safety rules and regulations, establishes safe chemical practices & procedures, attends safety meetings and training. Also, reports injury/illness and/or environmental incidents.
- Responsible for adherence to all Health, Safety and Environment requirements
- Manages employee’s performance and training
- Coach and review the work of Technical Service team members.
- Coordination with Technical Manager Americas to align resource allocation and priorities to meet provided objectives and manage projects to ensure deadlines are met (e.g. customer specific design of colorant range, or customer complaints).
- Work closely with Territory Sales Managers on customer projects and priorities
- Work cross functionally to understand changes in supply chain, market conditions and customer expectations to align the innovation opportunities and / or changes in ARM’s. Actively manage the risks of introducing alternative raw materials.
- Sign off on technical modifications of manufactured products
- Educate / inform internal customers of new or changing requirements and objectives
- Track, analyze, and report/publish data, identifying trends/themes to inform strategy.
- Application of problem-solving techniques in response to customer concerns and opportunities.
- Communicate technology in terms of features and benefits as they support project objectives. Prepare exhibits, specimens and presentation that illustrate key characteristics.
- Determine specification requirements for materials used in or result from research development
- Provide effective and timely communication at every stage of a project. This will include (but will not be limited to) progress reports, updates, and project milestones reached or missed.
- Present technical reports at customer / management meetings. Actively support sales and marketing staff to present technical work on new developments and technical support to customers.
- Travel –– provide on-site customer support as deemed necessary.
- Assure completion of bench work required and defined by experimental design.
- Participate in the planning process, including fiscal year tactical plan, budgetary expenses, project objectives, timeliness, and guidelines for the development of technologies to address market specific needs.
- Perform other duties from time to time as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in BS/BA in an appropriate field of science (Chemist or Chemical Engineering preferred).
- 7 years’ experience in pigment dispersions, thermoset, paint technology, or coatings applications or commensurate experience.
- Direct colorant and/or paint formulation experience, or specific base chemistry experience ie water, solvent, 1K, 2K, epoxy, urethane, acrylic, enamel, alkyd. etc.
- Working knowledge of color theory, material measurement and surface appearance science.
- Academic background in coatings chemistry, polymer chemistry, surfactant/additive technology, or rheology is desirable.
- Knowledge of coating film defects and ability to resolve failure modes associated with these defects such as flood / coat, fisheyes, lightfastness, cure issues, blocking, etc.
- ERP experience with a preference for SAP.
- Proven project management experience and a demonstrated ability for problem solving and the capacity to handle several projects simultaneously.
- A basic commercial understanding of business and customer priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
- Ability to supervise and manage others. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Proven computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. Ability to generate and work with Excel models while simultaneously implementing new business enterprise systems.
- Power BI knowledge is preferred.
- Proven project management skills preferred.
- Experience in ISO9001 and Continuous Improvement Initiatives such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and JIT.
