The job of Interpreter - Translator was established for the purpose/s of providing complex and responsible oral interpretation at various functions and meetings and written translation work of various documents into English or Spanish; serving as a resource to other District personnel requiring assistance with non-English speaking persons.
Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Extensive vocabulary and correct usage, grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation of English and Spanish. Correct oral and written usage of English and Spanish. Regional differences, slang and other expressions in word usage and idioms that do not translate literally. Simultaneous and consecutive interpretation techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Modern office practices, procedures, equipment and assigned software. Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by training or coursework in interpretation and translation of Spanish. Two years of experience translating written documents and providing simultaneous oral interpretation services; public school experience is desirable.

Essential Duties
Essential Functions: Converts a variety of written materials from one language to another (e.g. bulletins, correspondence, newsletters, notices, teaching materials, etc. ) for the purpose of providing written documents from/to second language use in the classroom and/or communications with student family members and the non-English speaking community members. Interprets oral communications in English and Spanish (e.g. expulsion and suspension hearings, interviews, Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) meetings, School Attendance Review Board proceedings, and SST, 504 and various District meetings, etc.) for the purpose of providing consecutive interpretation and simultaneous translation of English and Spanish conversations for meeting participants. Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials (e.g. annual notifications, brochures, calendars, eligibility reports, handbooks, testing materials, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to parents, staff; providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information. Reads and rewrites material in Spanish (e.g. articles, bulletins, correspondence, Individualized Educational Plans, instructional materials, and confidential legal, medical and psychological reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials in Spanish following established rules related to factors such as word meaning, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation. Translates accurately and concisely documents and other materials from English to Spanish and Spanish to English (e.g. curriculum and testing materials, electronic mail, forms, handbooks, confidential legal and medical documents, state forms, etc.) for the purpose of providing translation and interpretation for school and District-level functions. Verifies translations made by others for the purpose of reviewing and editing materials for accuracy, context, grammar, readability and style.
Other Functions: Administer language assessments as directed by the Compensatory Education Department staff for the purpose of providing identifying students with limited English proficiency. Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g. file and record maintenance, operate a variety of standard office equipment, etc) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Ability to: Read, write, translate and interpret English and Spanish. Comprehend and interpret or translate vernacular language expressions of varying disciplines and nuances from on language to another without altering the original meaning and intent. Express thought and meaning between languages that is grammatically, idiomatically and structurally correct. Serve as an interpreter for a variety of District-wide meetings, workshops, conferences and special events. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with cultures and diverse groups of individuals. Interpret, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Prepare clear and comprehensive reports, maintain records and maintain confidentiality of privileged information. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and adapt to changing work priorities. Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software. Work independently under time constraints and meet schedules and timelines. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Type and input data at an acceptable rate of speed.
