Examples of Duties
- Cleans, stocks, and maintains washrooms, including keeping area disinfected at all times, refilling paper towels, tissues, and hand soap.
- Empties trash throughout departments and places in outside dumpster.
- Vacuums and/or mops large areas.
- Strips and wax floors and runs carpet cleaner throughout building. Changes light bulbs, cleans and disinfects water fountains.
- Cleans Windows
- Maintains accountability on cleaning supplies and keeps supply area neat and orderly.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and basic janitorial and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.
- Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of cleaning chemicals and pesticides, with ability to read and understand equipment manuals and label directions for correct mixing and use of cleaning supplies.
- Ability to operate a variety of cleaning tools in performance of duties, including mop, broom, and vacuum.
- Ability to physically perform custodial duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, climbing ladders, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
- Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records according to state requirements.
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and complete work reports as appropriate.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
- Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

- Ability to serve on 24-hour call and respond to emergencies for alarm system. Possession of a valid driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
Supplemental Information
Incumbent performs duties according to a flexible, customary routine. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision with assignments guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Incumbent has moderate flexibility in the job. Work errors are primarily detected or prevented through standard safety procedures or notification from other County personnel.
Incumbent reports directly to Maintenance Supervisor.
Incumbent's duties involve sitting/walking at will, sitting/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, driving, speaking clearly, handling/grasping objects, and hearing sounds/communication. Strain is not prolonged and effort is exerted for short to moderate periods of time, usually in connection to such duties as clearing snow/ice from walkways.
Incumbent performs duties in both indoor and outdoor settings, involving working in wet/icy surroundings, near chemicals, and in high places. Safety precautions must be followed at all time, including wearing protective clothing or equipment, such as gloves when handling cleaning agents. Incumbent may be required to respond to situations involving potential physical harm to self or others, such as cleaning up emergency spills.
