Position Overview
The Environmental Compliance and Health & Safety Specialist will play a key role in ensuring Viking Plastics' adherence to both environmental regulations and health and safety standards. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) protocols and the ability to maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications. Additionally, the specialist will ensure compliance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Tier 1 automotive customer standards. The role includes responsibility for health and safety programs, hazard assessments, and regulatory compliance in line with OSHA and other relevant safety standards. The specialist will also develop and deliver training programs to promote environmental awareness and safe work practices among employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure Viking Plastics meets all federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Maintain and update the company’s environmental policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
- Prepare and submit necessary environmental reports and documentation.
- Greenhouse Gas Management:
- Develop and implement strategies for managing Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions.
- Monitor and report on GHG emissions data.
- Identify opportunities for reducing Viking Plastics' carbon footprint and implement initiatives to achieve GHG reduction targets.
- ISO Certifications:
- Maintain and update ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 50001 (Energy Management) certifications.
- Coordinate internal and external audits to ensure compliance with ISO standards.
- Implement corrective actions for any non-conformances identified during audits.
- Compliance with OEM and Tier 1 Standards:
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards set by OEM and Tier 1 automotive customers.
- Stay updated on customer-specific environmental requirements and integrate them into the company’s environmental management system.
- Liaise with OEM and Tier 1 customers regarding environmental compliance matters.
- Health & Safety Management:
- Develop and implement health and safety programs in compliance with OSHA regulations and Viking Plastics’ safety policies.
- Conduct regular workplace safety audits and hazard assessments.
- Investigate and report on workplace accidents or incidents, ensuring corrective measures are taken.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce safe work practices throughout the facility.
- Training and Development:
- Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on environmental policies, health & safety procedures, and best practices.
- Ensure all employees are aware of their roles and responsibilities related to environmental compliance and workplace safety.
- Promote a culture of environmental stewardship and health and safety within Viking Plastics.
- Sustainability Initiatives:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement sustainability initiatives.
- Track and report on the progress of sustainability projects.
- Stay informed on industry trends and emerging technologies related to environmental sustainability and safety standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Safety, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of experience in environmental compliance and health & safety roles.
- In-depth knowledge of Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions and reduction strategies.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and OSHA standards and certification processes.
- Strong understanding of OEM and Tier 1 automotive customer environmental and safety standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and environmental management software and portals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Experience in conducting environmental and safety training programs.
- Knowledge of sustainable practices and emerging environmental and safety technologies.
Working Conditions
- Office and manufacturing plant environment with occasional travel to various sites for audits, inspections, and safety assessments.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
