Description
The Cost Estimating Engineer will be tasked with preparing cost estimates for metal fabrication projects, balancing competitive pricing with profitability. This role demands a deep understanding of metal fabrication processes, materials, and labor costs. The candidate will analyze product specifications and utilize their knowledge of methodologies, techniques, principles, and processes to determine the labor, material, and other direct and indirect costs involved in producing metal products. This position involves interaction with customers and internal teams to ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs.
Responsibilities:
- Quoting and Estimating: Generate quotes for ferrous and non-ferrous metal products to be produced in a fabrication facility - laser/press brake/welding/machining.
- Project Analysis: Review project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates.
- Collaboration: Work with sales, engineering, production, and procurement teams to gather information needed to produce accurate estimates.
- Cost Factor Identification: Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time, materials, and labor expenses. Identify equipment, raw materials, purchased components, packaging, and other requirements needed for production.
- Technical Support: Provide technical advice to teammates and customers with respect to issues concerning design and manufacturability.
- Material Costs Gathering: Assist Supply Chain in obtaining material costs, tooling quotes, identifying key vendors and part sourcing solutions.
- Presentation: Work closely with Sales to provide a clear and concise cost estimate, including profit markup and lead time estimate to be presented to customers.
- Onboarding: Identify/create new parts as needed in company ERP system, including accurate bill of materials and manufacturing method for projects won.
Requirements
Education and Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field or related experience in Engineering/Estimating.
- 5 or more years of related experience in cost estimating/manufacturing environment
- Experience within a fast-paced environment
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of metal fabrication processes, materials, and labor costs. Lean manufacturing knowledge and experience is a plus.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and prior experience with ERP systems (Epicor, JobBOSS is a plus)
- A highly motivated, service-oriented individual with a strong attention to detail and accuracy, having solid judgement and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and use CAD software (SolidWorks a plus)
- Strong time management, prioritization, and organization skills. Must be able to work well under deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
