What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Police position at Village of Boys Town?
The Village of Boys Town is a close-knit community with a vibrant population, including a significant number of young people. Our village values safety, trust, and positive engagement between law enforcement and our youth. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Police Chief to lead and manage the police department and oversee law enforcement operations in our unique setting. The candidate must be dedicated to innovative community policing and willing to communicate and collaborate with key Village stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Position Boys Town Police Department as the national leader of innovative community policing, particularly with regard to law enforcement interactions with youth.
- Provide leadership and direction to the police department, ensuring effective law enforcement operations.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs to enhance public safety and foster positive relationships between law enforcement and youth.
- Supervise and evaluate department personnel, ensuring proper training and use of de-escalation techniques, youth engagement strategies and professional development.
- Manage the department's budget, resources, and equipment to ensure efficient operations.
- Work collaboratively with the Village’s key corporate stakeholder, Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home.
- Foster positive relationships between the police department and Village residents, neighboring law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
- Establish and maintain strong partnerships with Village schools, and open communication channels between police officers, school staff and family teachers.
- Oversee investigations, emergency response efforts, and crisis management situations.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as departmental regulations.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of law enforcement procedures, Nebraska criminal justice laws, and community policing strategies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle high-pressure situations, make critical decisions, and manage crisis situations in a calm and professional manner.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Ability to complete a Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center management course within 6 months of hire.
- Extensive law enforcement experience, with progressively responsible leadership roles, including at least 5 years of experience in police command staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within the Nebraska juvenile justice system and engaging with youth.
- Experience working with youth and individuals receiving care for mental health challenges.
- Civil Service Commission Certification.
