SEASONAL MAINTENANCE WORKER

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of Village-owned buildings, grounds, easements and open spaces.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Public Works Director’s designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assists and performs routine Public Works duties related to the maintenance of water and sewer systems, roadways, street lighting, village owned right of ways, properties and facilities.

· Performs lawn maintenance, including mowing, trimming and debris removal.

· Operates riding mowers, push mowers, line trimmers, pole saws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, and other equipment as needed.

· Performs basic custodial work such as sweeping, raking and refuse disposal.

· Assists with the operations required for Village-sponsored events

· Collects and disposes of waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.

· Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.

· Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

· High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

· Valid Illinois State "Class D" Driver's License.

· Knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.

· Some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.

· Some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

· Demonstrated skill in safe operation of listed tools and equipment.

· Ability to work independently (without direct supervision) and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

· Ability to lift heavy objects (50 pounds frequently; more than 100 pounds occasionally), walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse and varying weather conditions.

· Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

· Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.

· Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

· Must possess a strong work ethic, ambition and an understanding of teamwork.

· Must display proper conduct reflective of a professional employee of the Village of Hazel Crest.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 50 per week
