Summary of Position
GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION :
The Assistant Building Inspector position is a skilled, professional position tasked to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Building Inspection and Zoning Department for the Village of Jackson and the Building Inspection Department for the City of Hartford. This position assists in the enforcement of state statutes, municipal ordinances, building, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC codes, and other regulations applicable to building and zoning related projects for all new and existing residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and components. The Assistant Inspector further helps to ensure all buildings are properly maintained to safeguard the general health, safety and welfare of all buildings and their occupants through enforcement of Village Property Maintenance Code. Hours may vary, and shall generally be 30 hours on average, per week, with a minimum of two (2) 8-hour days per week in Jackson and one (1) 8-hour day per week in Hartford. The Village of Jackson is the employer and benefits administrator of this position. While working in the Village of Jackson, the immediate supervisor is the Director of Building Inspection and Zoning. While working in the City of Hartford, this role is supervised by the City's Building Inspector.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Assists Village of Jackson and City of Hartford in carrying out the day-to-day building inspections operations of each respective municipality.
- Performs plan reviews, enforcement of zoning codes, erosion control, other municipal codes relating to pools, fences, sheds, signs, and other structures or projects regulated by the Village.
- Assists contractors, applicants, consultants and other members of the public with technical questions related to permit submittals, code requirements.
- Reviews and issues various building, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other permits
- Performs simple to complex plan reviews related to residential / commercial / industrial construction projects.
- Prepares and communicates inspection reports using verbal, hand-written, and typed methods.
Education and / or Experience Required
Minimum requirements include a high-school diploma or GED. A Bachelor's degree, associate's degree (A.A.) or technical certification in a related field from a college or trade / technical school is highly desired. At least three (3) years of progressive residential and / or commercial inspection experience. Equivalent experience, education, or training in related architectural, building, and construction fields may also be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of building, plumbing, electric, HVAC codes and standards as well as interpretation and application of zoning codes. Knowledge of construction methods and materials used in building construction and related mechanical and structural work. Ability to read and interpret detailed construction plans and specifications. Ability to enforce and interpret regulations firmly and tactfully while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, architects, property owners, village employees, government officials, and the public using effective oral and written communication. Analyzes situations objectively and determine the proper course of action. Ability to make effective decisions under stressful conditions. Proficiency using / operating computers and various software programs, GIS, mobile devices, general office equipment, and other tools or equipment relating to inspection procedures.
Permanent part-time employees working a full-time equivalent (FTE) schedule of .50 or greater shall be allotted 20 hours / 5 workdays of paid time off as of January 1 of each calendar year. An employee hired between January 1 and June 30 will receive 20 hours / 5 workdays of paid time off. For permanent part-time employees hired after July 1 of a calendar year, that employee is not eligible for paid time off until the following January 1 (i.e., they must wait the rest of their year of hire, until they become eligible for paid time off).
