The Apprentice Lineman is someone who will work under the supervision of an Electric Division lineman by learning and practicing the specific job skills over a four year training program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid State of Illinois driver’s license
- Completion of Lineman schooling is preferred, but not required
- Working knowledge of electrical distribution system and an understanding of the standard safety measures and precautions
REQUIREMENTS
- Comply with all aspects of the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program
- Respond to emergency calls as needed
- Learn and apply troubleshooting procedures
- Attend all required meetings
- Complete all training programs, book work, and testing in a timely manor
- Ability to perform manual labor
- Climb utility poles and work from an aerial truck
- Requires ability to work under inclement weather conditions
- Perform the operation, maintenance, and repair of all pertinent machinery, vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Detect safety hazards and institute appropriate corrective procedures
- Construct, maintain, and repair primary and secondary electrical service lines and substations as directed during the apprenticeship
- Follow verbal and written instructions
- Establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with co-workers and the general public
- Must be able to obtain a CDL, Class A within one year of employment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF THE JOB
- Full compliance with the requirements of the Village of Rantoul/IBEW Local 51 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program. The Apprentice is to comply with the certification of professional development coursework outlined in the program
- Duties during the program include safe work practices and the operation of the electric utility, operation of the equipment, line tools, climbing, tree trimming on secondary lines; learn to work under the direction of a senior employee
- Under direct supervision of a senior employee, continue to learn the operation of additional equipment and tools, recognize and applications of materials, secondary service connections, service work and climbing to secondary heights
- Progress to transferring energized secondary lines; learns to climb to primary line heights and works on de-energized conductors; learns to install materials and assemblies such as transformer stations
- Additional climbing and operations of the aerial (bucket) truck for secondary and service work including single phase and three phase de-energized lines; work on various underground and overhead construction; trim trees with sticks to energized primary lines of up to 4160 volts and wiring of single and three phase transformers
- By the third year, the apprentice, under direct supervision of a senior employee, should be exposed and adept at climbing, bucket work to advanced skills of secondary and service work; learns additional underground and overhead construction methods, works under supervision on single phase and energized primary lines/hookups and hot stick work including fusing and installation of hot line clamps; performs tree trimming around single phase lines in the bucket and fully understands the wiring of P.T.s and C.T.s in metering cabinets
- Performs climbing and bucket work learning advanced skills in single phase primary work; continues learning underground and overhead construction, performs three phase energized primary work in a bucket under supervision and works on three phase line trimming
