The Water Treatment Plant Operator under general supervision performs a variety of duties in the treatment and production of the public water supply; repairs and maintains water plant equipment ensuring optimum operating efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least two years’ experience in mechanical and/or electrical maintenance and repair
- Working knowledge in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery utilized in wastewater treatment
- Working knowledge of applicable safety procedures and precautions
- Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical repairs pertaining to the maintenance of a wastewater treatment system
REQUIREMENTS
Be on-call for emergencies 24 hours a day and on weekends- Must have a valid State of Illinois driver’s license
- Preferred CDL License, but not required. If currently doesn’t hold a CDL, must be willing to obtain one in 2 years of being hired
- Ability to perform the operation, maintenance and repair of all pertinent machinery, equipment, and tools
- Perform accurate adjustments to equipment in the wastewater treatment process
- Maintain and submit all requisite operational records, logs, and files
- Inspect plant machinery and equipment for the detection of flaws and defects in operation and to recommend appropriate remedial action
- Follow appropriate techniques, policies, procedures, and equipment operation
- Work safely in confined spaces
- Use and apply basic mathematics
- Perform building and grounds maintenance activities
- Detect health and safety hazards and institute appropriate corrective procedures
- Skillfully operate the tools and equipment used in electrical and system testing and repairs
- Follow verbal and written instructions
- Must obtain a Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification from Illinois EPA within seven years after the completion of a probationary term
RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates equipment and machinery used in the treatment process such as pumps, digesters and filters; controls the flow of sludge and effluent through the treatment plant; adjusts recirculation rates; monitors and controls disinfection process, and releases treated water to receiving stream- Monitors the wastewater treatment process during an assigned shift via visual inspection or SCADA control; performs visual inspections of machinery, equipment and control panels for defects and breakdowns; measures rate of flow of effluent water through the treatment plant; makes
necessary adjustments in the treatment process when laboratory analysis detects problems; monitors and adjusts programmable controls for variable frequency drives
- Maintains, services and repairs treatment plant equipment and machinery including emergency generators, pumps, motors, belts, meters, gauges, valves and other plant equipment; maintains and cleans treatment structures such as clarifiers, tanks and towers
- Gathers water samples from points throughout the treatment process and delivers them to the laboratory for testing and analysis
- Performs building and grounds maintenance activities at the wastewater treatment facility; mows and trims grass, plows snow and paints various equipment and buildings
- Maintains daily log of wastewater treatment plant operations; maintains records of all repairs on pumps, motors, and other equipment and machinery

This position will say open until filled. Pay is based on qualification and experience. Once an offer is extended, the employee will have up to a year to live within 20 miles of the Village corporate limits.
