What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crossing Guard position at Village of Rib Mountain?
Purpose of the Position
To improve student achievement by improving safe access via walk paths to and from Rib Mountain Elementary Schools by providing adult supervised crossing(s) at designated public streets.
Supervision
Receives general supervision from the Village Administrator. Work is reviewed occasionally while in progress.
Essential Functions of the Job
May include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assisting students for the purpose of safe access to and from school.
- Crossing students safely, not to direct traffic but to provide gaps in traffic for safe student crossing.
- Serving as a good example to children.
- Maintaining regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Performing related duties consistent with job description and assignment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess the basic physical requirements (good sight, hearing and mobility)
- Responsible, dependable, and punctual
- Neat and orderly appearance
- Read, write, and speak English fluently
Knowledge of:
- Basic traffic laws, school zone signage and pavement marking(s).
- All fundamentals of crossing guard duties as prescribed by the Village of Rib Mountain.
Ability to:
- Display all safety measures, i.e., appropriate equipment and clothing.
- Function for long periods of time standing outdoors.
- Complete all provided required training.
- Respond quickly and calmly in the event of an emergency.
- Understand the distance of traffic approaching in relation to crossing.
- Understand when there are lulls or gaps in traffic.
- Understand when it is safe to permit student(s) crossing.
- Perform required reporting of motorist violations as necessary
- Demonstrate an interest in and an understanding of children so they respond to direction.
- Work and communicate effectively with children.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate. A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply crossing guard knowledge obtained from the training provided by the Transportation Department and/or other agencies.
Completion of equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade required.
Work Environment includes:
- Frequent contact with children.
- May be exposed to inclement weather conditions and frequent traffic movement.
- Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud.
Physical Requirements:
Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time and have sufficient mobility to work in an outdoor environment. Ability to reach required. Hearing is also essential to the job. Sight assessment of the work area includes frequent far acuity, depth perception, and peripheral vision. For strength, light exert force to twenty pounds occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
