This position entails tasks that are mechanical and diverse in nature requiring independent judgment and the ability to work independently. Regular work hours are 7:00 am to 4:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch five days a week, however extended hours may be required. Ability to prioritize assignments is necessary, in determining the repair and service of vehicles and equipment. This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Solid Waste Manager or Solid Waste Supervisors. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Job Title Summary

Essential Job Functions
- Service, repair, lubrication, tire repair, and clean motorized equipment.
- Perform major repair, service, on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems on a wide variety of equipment and vehicles including dump trucks, grapple trucks, refuse trucks, backhoes, trailers, Semi trucks and trailers, loaders, pick-up trucks, automobiles, and lawn mowers.
- Diagnose, schedule, and perform equipment maintenance/preventative maintenance accurately and timely.
- Works with hand tools such as shovels, picks, pressure washers, weed eater, lawn mower, brooms, mops, rakes, etc.
- May perform labor type duties such as trash pickup, dumpster relief, special pickups, illegal dumps, weed eating, painting, etc.
- Troubleshoot Diagnose, and repair engines, drive trains, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and Maintenance of computerized service and keep records, etc.
- Repair and replace pumps, braking systems, tires, etc.
- Repair or replace clutches on a wide variety of vehicles including, but not limited to Solid Waste trucks, pick-ups and automobiles.
- Make service calls to repair broken down equipment and vehicles, as needed.
- Perform heavy equipment and vehicle inspections, diagnose problems, recondition parts, order parts, and perform heavy equipment and vehicle services.
- Complete work orders, and perform necessary repairs.
- Responsible for maintenance of shop and equipment.
- Adhere to safety practices and standards, and attend safety meetings.
- Responsible for the upkeep of assigned vehicles.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Solid Waste grounds, work area, shop, and equipment are kept clean and orderly, and meet all safety guidelines.
Other Responsibilities and Job Duties
- Repair and Refurbish Solid Waste Dumpsters including welding as required.

Physical Demands
- Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include sitting, standing, walking for extended periods of time, driving or riding in car, bus or van, or other duties assigned.
- The usual requirements in a garage and/or office environment will require lifting of equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or moving up to 150 pounds.
- Often required to stay in an uncomfortable position for extended periods of time, including bending or squatting.

Travel Requirements
- Occasional travel – ability to travel for activities such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the area.
- Must be able to travel by air as needed to attend training, conferences, and related activities.
- Overnight travel may be required.
- Periodic travel in and out of the area to maintain and repair heavy equipment and vehicles, as needed.
- Must be able to understand and use computerized systems/diagnostic computers.
- High school diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years full-time technical training in diesel maintenance and mechanical repair, plus (2) years full-time experience in diesel maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of heavy equipment. Must be willing to learn new technologies and systems.
- New Mexico CDL B driver’s license preferred.
- Must be willing to be called if needed outside of working hours.
- Must be able to pass criminal history checks.
- Must be willing to take and pass a drug/alcohol test and comply with Village “Drug Free” Policy.
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of medium truck, heavy truck, and heavy equipment maintenance and mechanics
- Knowledge of safe operations and repair of medium and heavy truck and heavy equipment, including brake, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and diesel engine repair
- Knowledge of repairing gasoline and diesel engines.
