Mini Adventure Camp Day Camp Counselor Position

Starting Wage: $15.00/hour
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Mini Camp Counselors provide active supervision to children (2 years – 5 years) registered in Mini Adventure Camp. Works in concert with counselor coworkers in planning, coordinating, and implementing various recreation and instructional programs for camp. The Mini Adventure Day Camp Counselor’s main role is to assist the Lead Counselor in leading groups and providing fun and safe experiences for campers. The program meets at the Villa Park Recreation Center.
WORKING HOURS:
The Camp Counselor is a part-time position working seasonally, Monday-Friday, June 2-August 8. (10 weeks). Hours vary weekly from 8:45 am-4 pm. Additionally, be available for all trainings the week of May 26.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the direction and supervision of the Camp Director; the camp counselor is responsible for helping with the day-to-day planning, and implementing of activities, crafts, and games of the program.
- Plans and administers diversified camp activities including nature, arts and crafts, games, sports, music,and drama, appropriate to the campers’ age group.
- Participates in staff training and planning sessions and other staff meetings.
- Able to be organized, yet flexible enough to meet the needs of the children, both mentally and physically.
- Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality, and genuine awareness.
- Keep an open line of communication with the Camp Director regarding relevant observations.
- Reports and corrects unsafe program conditions.
- Is aware of campers’ allergies.
- Motivate campers and encourage positive peer relationships.
- Sets up and cleans up assigned areas prior to and at conclusion of program.
- Assist Lead Counselor as directed.
- Take attendance and maintain sign-in sheets.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 16 years of age. Camp Counselors should be outgoing, energetic, creative, organized and have some experience working with children. Counselors must become certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to successfully pass a background screening
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work effectively and support other members of the team; ability to work effectively and maintain strong working relationships with children, parents, employees, and other relevant stakeholders; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to effectively apply written and oral English language skills, additional Spanish language skills is advantageous but not required; advanced organization skills, maintain multiple projects and schedules; ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing individually or in a group setting; ability to work under stressful situations; knowledge of various behavior patterns of children as well as basic concepts of development in children; knowledge of methods of instruction, care, supervision, and practices of children in a camp setting.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must possess mobility to conduct activities that involve substantial walking, standing, and moderate sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, and reaching on a frequent basis; ability to work with and above shoulder height with a weight up to 20 pounds; ability to work with arms extended shoulder height with a weight of up to 20 pounds. Must be able to stoop, bend, and kneel on the floor without assistance; must be able to push and pull items such as playground and outdoor equipment. Work is primarily performed in an outdoor setting with constant interruptions. Exposure to outdoor elements and inclement weather such as rain, sleet, excessive heat, and cold are expected. Moderate to high levels of noise consistent with an outdoor camp environment are expected.
