Job Description Position Summary: The Laboratory Manager oversees day to day operations, communications, financial management, and personnel development. The Laboratory Manager demonstrates extensive knowledge and experience with molecular diagnostics, chemistry, toxicology, microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, endocrinology, therapeutic drug monitoring, diagnostic immunology, and serology. The Laboratory Manager performs a wide variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to improve laboratory operations. This position requires a highly motivated individual who enjoys working in a fast -paced evolving and growing, dynamic team environment General Job Functions & Key Accountabilities: Responsible and accountable for the overall operations of the Clinical departments. Overall operations of the department include development of department goals and objectives that are consistent with company’s mission, the management of personnel, preparing/monitoring of and accountability for the department budgets. Management and oversight of daily operations within the department ensuring appropriate execution and adherence to policies and procedures within the Clinical Departments. Monitors Quality Assurance Metrics & PT performance. Implement improvement plans and updates quality indicators and/or benchmarks as needed. Assures the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with established regulatory/accreditation agency standards. Oversees all testing performed under his/her supervision is according to established, approved procedures and quality control policies. Creates an environment where all testing is done under optimal conditions (Instruments functioning properly; reagents in good condition and proper technique followed.) Monitor section shifts (evening-nights) and meets with staff at least 4 times a year. Assures employee compliance with department and company procedures. Assures that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied as per department and company policies. Attends Management/Leadership meetings as scheduled/required and communicates department/company policies, performance improvement initiatives and all other required information to their staff. Assures the provision of a safe employee/patient environment. Maintains knowledge related to the operations of the Clinical Departments. Works collaboratively with all levels of company interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within the laboratory. Demonstrates positive customer service, fosters positive employee relations, and assures that staff adhere to the company’s standards. Demonstrates support of company initiatives and projects and functions as a positive change agent. Promotes a positive and professional image and is a role model, coach, mentor and resource for staff and peers. Reviews and all technical procedures performed in areas of responsibility and maintain explanation of such in manual form. Prepares and submits Laboratory Quality Assurance, Accreditations, and Safety reports as per department policy. Create, revise, or discontinue laboratory Standard Operating Procedures. Evaluates and implements new instrumentation and methodologies. Ensures that maintenance procedures are performed as needed and are well documented. Evaluates reference laboratories' procedures, turnaround times and services. Coordinates and maintains all laboratory computer reports formats. Interviews, hires, evaluate, counsels, and terminates employees as per company policy. Conducts monthly staff meetings to update staff and/or address department issues and records meeting minutes for all staff. Monitors equipment utilized in the laboratory with proper follow up, and corrective action. Utilizes multiple methodologies to communicate information. Complies with all company policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control. Participate in preparation of annual operational, capital and personnel budgets for the department Evaluate and manage ongoing workflow of the department ensuring appropriate staffing schedules to maintain the volume and workload based on staff skill level and abilities. Ensure regulatory understanding and compliance throughout the company Oversees the technical and analytical activities of the laboratory personnel Negotiates new/existing contracts with vendors Organizes/assigns work to appropriate staff Provides technical and professional support to testing personnel Manages inventory Provides guidance with validation of new instruments and new assays Interacts with government and other agencies (State Health Department, CAP, CLIA, DEA, OSHA, DOH, etc.) as appropriate Implements and maintains the standards of the accreditation body Organizes educational/training/safety activities for technical and non-technical personnel Performs and provides instructions to management team and technical personnel Participates in monthly meetings with laboratory management team, Medical Director& Laboratory Administrators Reviews monthly quality improvement indicators' data Interacts with the reference laboratories to ensure quality of the results Participates in selection of appropriate technical personnel. Provides coaching to laboratory supervisors and personnel. Performs other duties as directed by authority Performs technical duties as needed. Skills & Qualification Requirements: Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills, and interact effectively with internal and external customers. Work effectively in fast paced environment with multiple priorities Monitor and provide safe work environment, prepare incident reports, and implement preventative measures Accountable for employee review, performance management and disciplinary actions. Responsible for employee training as well as team building. Environmental Risks: Temperature- Laboratory Environment Chemical Exposure- Laboratory Environment Biohazard Exposure Noise- Instrumentation Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements: Minimum Bachelor of Science degree. Masters preferred. Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist under CLIA 6 years managerial experience. Broad knowledge of tests performed, and equipment utilized in the laboratory with proper follow up. Ability to deal with confidential information with the utmost discretion Strong interpersonal skills, able to deal courteously and effectively with administration, peers and the public sector. Sufficient technical ability to be able to troubleshoot independently and knowledge to know when to ask for assistance Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office Strong communication skills; both written and verbal Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position Must be able to adjust schedule to meet business unit requirements, which may include extended hours. Travel: As required for operations, client and personnel meetings, training, and conferences.
