The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for assisting Veterinarians with the best possible care of animals. The Assistant will be performing an initial evaluation of the animal’s condition, checking vitals, collecting samples, administering medications and providing clients with knowledge in prevention and care for their pets, under doctor recommendations. Our Assistants must help with stocking examination and surgery rooms with supplies, sterilizing instruments and ensuring that equipment is in working order. Assistants also communicate with clients in a liaison manner for doctors, at times, and update patient files constantly throughout the day. Below are some key duties during day-to-day operations:
-Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, and client education.
-Perform initial evaluation of the pets condition.
-Obtain and prepare laboratory samples as requested by the veterinarian, i.e., blood, fecal, urine, ear cytology, etc.
-Provide restraint of animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner for examination and treatment by the veterinarian.
-Accurately prepare and dispense medications as directed by the doctor.
-Prepare vaccinations for administration.
-Prepare and set up for surgical procedures while utilizing knowledge of proper sterile field requirements.
-Monitor recovery of surgery patients and communicate with owners.
-Monitor hospitalized pets and perform treatments as directed by the doctor.
-Obtain and process radiographs for doctor evaluation.
-Utilize hospital computer system, Intravet, to document medical records and communicate with clients and teammates.
-IV catheter placements.
-Admit and discharge patients on the doctor's orders.
-Assist reception and kennel areas when additional assistance is needed.
*Please note that you must be available to work a rotating weekend every 6 weeks.
Starting pay for this position is $15.00/hour. After 90 days of employment, team members become eligible for Village Veterinary Clinic's tier program, which offers opportunities for advancement and pay increases based on demonstrated skills and knowledge. The program includes Levels I, II, and III, each with its own compensation range tied to specific competencies.
