Description
Vincennes University invites applications for a Head Women’s Basketball Coach. The Head Women’s Basketball Coach provides direction and leadership for all aspects of the college’s intercollegiate women’s basketball team. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the successful candidate will teach basketball skills at the collegiate level; hire qualified coaches to assist in the development of student athletes; develop, manage, and assess budgets and equipment, adhering to VU athletic policies; and ensure academic and athletic eligibility of all basketball student-athletes. In collaboration with the Department of Athletics and student-athletes, the head coach is also responsible for fundraising for the women’s basketball program. This position requires strong planning and organizing skills as well as effective verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to create and maintain positive relationships with athletes, other coaches, and college staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide administration, leadership, and direction for the intercollegiate women’s basketball program
- Teach individual basketball skills and strategies; build, develop, and evaluate teamwork; and develop and enforce training rules
- Monitor and support the academic performance, leadership, and progress of student-athletes with an emphasis on retaining student-athletes
- Scout and recruit student-athletes who are qualified, both academically and athletically, for intercollegiate competition
- Establish, develop, and maintain positive relationships and effective communication with local area club and high school basketball coaches and programs
- Conduct intercollegiate programs in accordance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and established university and athletic department rules and regulations
- In collaboration with the Director of Athletics, work cooperatively with Student Activities leaders and staff
- Develop collaborative and collegial relationships with other coaches, student leaders, and staff in the department and throughout the campus community
- Fully participate in athletic activities, including departmental meetings, outreach and fundraising events, and other relevant functions as requested
- Develop, implement, and evaluate practice and game/tournament schedules
- Schedule all team travel arrangements
- Compile and report team scores and statistics to the NJCAA office in a timely fashion
- Assist with advising, registration, and financial aid processes of student-athletes
- Work closely with university communications and marketing staff to develop website and promotional materials for basketball
- Organize fundraising activities to enhance and develop athletic programs
- Coordinate and oversee summer camps and clinics
- Inventory and track assigned athletic equipment
- Maintain and improve existing facilities, including general preparation and maintenance
- Work closely with athletic support to staff home games/tournaments
- Understand and comply with the policies and procedures of the university
- Complete and process appropriate paperwork in an accurate and timely manner
- Maintain and manage a budget and track team and program expenditures to ensure spending is appropriate and within the provided budget and Title IX guidelines
- Maintain and manage student-athlete scholarship awards
- Maintain a demeanor on the court that is professional and exhibit behavior away from the court that is representative of university and athletic department missions and policies
- Work closely with the Director of Athletics, Dean of Students, and Associate Provost to ensure student-athlete behavior is appropriate both on the court and away from the court
- Issue discipline in accordance with the VU Student Code of Conduct and VU Athletic Standards
- Perform additional tasks as requested by the Director of Athletics
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- High school and/or college-level basketball playing and/or coaching experience
- Experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
- Current valid unrestricted driver’s license
- Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain as per condition of employment
Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrated supervisory & management experience
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage a program
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with faculty, students, and staff within a campus community; and the ability to foster positive resolutions when conflicts occur
- Teaching and team-building, related to student-athletes
- Experience managing budgets and coordinating schedules
- Academic advising, particularly when working with student-athletes
- Program fundraising and development
- Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office products, and database programs
- Familiarity with the policies, regulations, and objectives of the athletic codes of the NJCAA
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency
