Job Summary:
The Director of Special Services provides strategic leadership and oversight for all special education programs and services within Vinita Public Schools. This role focuses on ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting inclusive practices, and advocating for the needs of students with disabilities. The Director will foster a collaborative environment, working closely with administrators, teachers, families, and community partners to maximize student growth, learning, and success. Crucially, the Director will focus on leadership and strategic planning, with administrative support provided for the coordination of evaluations and reevaluations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Strategic Program Leadership and Compliance (35%)
- Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive special education programs and services that align with federal and state regulations (IDEA, Section 504).
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of IEPs and other required documentation, with administrative support for the coordination of evaluations and reevaluations.
- Monitor compliance with all special education laws, policies, and procedures.
- Develop and implement procedures for the identification, evaluation, and placement of students with disabilities.
- Stay abreast of current research, best practices, and legal developments in special education.
II. Staff Supervision, Development, and Support (25%)
- Supervise and evaluate special education staff, including therapists. Work collaboratively with principals, teachers, and support personnel.
- Provide professional learning opportunities to enhance staff knowledge and skills in special education.
- Recruit, hire, and onboard qualified special education staff.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Provide direct support and guidance to administrative staff assisting with the coordination of evaluations and reevaluations.
III. Student Support and Advocacy (20%)
- Serve as a strong advocate for scholars with disabilities, ensuring their rights are protected and their needs are met.
- Collaborate with school administrators and teachers to promote inclusive practices and ensure access to the general education curriculum.
- Provide guidance and support to families of students with disabilities.
- Oversee the provision of related services, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
IV. Budget and Resource Management (10%)
- Develop and manage the special education budget, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
- Seek and secure grant funding to support special education programs and services.
- Manage the procurement and distribution of special education materials and equipment.
V. Community and Interagency Collaboration (10%)
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community agencies and organizations that provide services to students with disabilities.
- Facilitate interagency collaboration to ensure seamless transitions for students with disabilities.
- Represent the district at local, state, and national special education meetings and conferences.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years of experience in special education, including administrative experience.
- Extensive knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to inclusive practices and student success.
- Demonstrated ability to delegate and manage administrative tasks effectively.
- Preferred qualifications or willingness to pursue additional learning:
- Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Valid Oklahoma Special Education Administration Certification.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties in a variety of settings, including offices, classrooms, and homes.
