Orientation : Has to be scheduled on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday - 8 : 30 am until approximately noon
Cannot bring cell phone or smart watch into the institution. Will need to report with a valid driver's license. Items must be in a clear plastic bag.
Job Duties / Responsibilities / Functions (including but not limited to)
- Prepares dialysate according to established procedures and patient's prescription
- Obtains and documents pre-dialysis vital signs to include weight and temperature
- Inspects patient's dialysis access and inserts needed and initiates dialysis according to unit protocol and
patient prescription
Measures, calculates and adjusts blood flow rates according to established protocols and prescriptionAdministers anticoagulant according to unit protocols and prescriptionChanges fluid removal rate and patient position and administers Normal Saline as directed by RN, ALPorder or unit protocol
Monitors vital signs (temperature, pulse, etc.) and patient condition then documents observationsappropriately
Documents patient treatment parameters and communicates patient's conditions and issues to RNsMonitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms and readjusts treatment parameters as defined byestablished protocols and individual patient requirements
Responds appropriately to dialysis related emergencies such as hypotensive episodes, needledisplacement or infiltration, clotting episodes, blood leaks, air Eboli, etc., and initiates CPR in the event of a
cardiac or respiratory arrest
Discontinues dialysis and establishes hemostasis following unit protocol and inspects, cleans, and dressesaccess according to unit protocol
Obtains and records post dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperatureVerifies absence of residual sterilant;Takes fluid samples or other specimens for testing and prepares them for shippingDiscards dialysis supplies and sanitizes the equipment according to the manufacturer and unit protocolsCommunicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the RN or ALP when neededUnder the direction of a registered nurse, monitors and documents the status of, and instructs patient incase of, vascular accesses, etc.
Reinforces treatment care with the patientEnsures patient has adequate patient care supplies and monitors inventoriesAssists nursing staff in administering basic treatments (e.g., hemodialysis therapy, etc.)Maintains professional conduct, good communication skills and confidentiality in the care of the patientsand participates in the multidisciplinary process
Reviews lab work and physician ordersPerforms basic clinical procedures (e.g., changing bandages)Readies the dialysis equipment before treatment and cares for the equipment after treatmentTests monitors and machine functions, including alarms, conductivity and temperature.Sets monitors and alarms according to unit and manufacturer protocolsCompletes flow sheets (via EMR) in order to verify patient billingComplies with agency policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations for patientcare and services (CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, and other governing agencies)
